FAMU Women Win HBCU Tennis Championship

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Florida A&M men’s and women’s tennis teams opened their fall campaign over the weekend, with the Lady Rattlers winning the 2019 HBCU National Tennis Championship at the Sugar Creek Golf and Tennis Club.
 
The Florida A&M women competed against 12 other schools and captured the crown with 29 points. Xavier (La.) finished second with 22 points, followed by Jackson State (17), Alabama A&M (15), Johnson C. Smith (7), Bethune-Cookman (6), Morgan State (5), North Carolina A&T State (4), Grambling State (4), Shaw (3), Clark Atlanta (3), Bluefield State (1) and Southern (1).
    
FAMU's Aylen Hubeaut and Arielle Nealy won individual titles on Saturday. In the women’s B draw, Hubeaut defeated teammate Rachel Harden in three sets 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(5), while Nealy beat Bethune-Cookman's Afrika Smith in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in the C draw.
 
On the men’s side, Florida A&M finished ninth with four points. Morgan State captured the title with 25 points, while Bethune-Cookman placed second with 17 points. Alabama A&M was third with 16 points, followed by Jackson State (11.5), Xavier (La.) (10), North Carolina A&T State (10), Shaw (9) and Bluefield State (7). Morehouse College also competed at the HBCU Championships, but did not record a point.
