MEAC Football Week 3: Nine Games on the Docket for Saturday

NORFOLK, Va., Sept. 11, 2019--Week three of the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) football season features a full Saturday of games, as all nine teams will be in action. Howard reignites a historic rivalry in the Windy City, while Delaware State and Florida A&M will be at home for the first time this season.

Chicago Football Classic
Howard Bison (0-2, 0-0 MEAC) vs. Hampton Pirates (1-1, 0-0 Big South)

Howard and Hampton reignite the Battle of the Real HU in the Chicago Football Classic. The Bison lost the last meeting between the two schools, 20-17, in 2017 and have lost the last three in the series. The Bison are coming off their second loss of the season, 54-28 to Youngstown State on Saturday. After struggling against Maryland, junior quarterback Caylin Newton bounced back by throwing for 266 yards and a pair of touchdowns against Youngstown State. Kyle Anthony had 10 catches for 146 yards and three scores in that contest.
South Carolina State Bulldogs (2-0, 0-0 MEAC) vs. South Florida Bulls (0-2, 0-0 AAC)

The Bulldogs dominated the MEAC weekly awards yet again. For the second straight week, senior offensive lineman Alex Taylor was named Offensive Lineman of the Week, while redshirt junior defensive lineman Roderick Perry was named Defensive Player of the Week and sophomore kicker Dillon Bredesen was named Specialist of the Week. The Bulldogs racked up 390 yards of total offense against Lane on Saturday. The defense limited Lane to under 180 yards of offense and forced three fumbles. Senior linebacker Johnell Brown led the way on defense, logging seven tackles (one TFL), one sack, and one forced fumble, which resulted in a touchdown. Head coach Buddy Pough is in pursuit of history, needing two wins to become the all-time winningest coach in South Carolina State history. He is currently 127-71 at his alma mater.
Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (1-0, 0-0 MEAC) vs. Miami Hurricanes (0-2, 0-1 ACC)

The two Florida schools will meet for the just the fifth time ever. Miami has won all five meetings, including the last one, 41-13, in 2017. After last week’s game against Southeastern Louisiana was cancelled due to Hurricane Dorian, the Wildcats will look to regroup and build off the momentum from their win in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge over Jackson State on Sept. 1.
North Carolina Central Eagles (0-2, 0-0 MEAC) vs. Gardner-Webb Bulldogs (0-2, 0-0 Big South)

The Eagles will look for their first win of the season on Saturday, when they hit the road to take on Gardner-Webb. This will be just the third meeting between the two North Carolina schools, with the Eagles winning two of the three matchups – including a 24-17 win in Durham back in 2017. The Eagles will start the season with their third straight road game. Receiver Nique Martin had five catches for 80 yards in the 42-3 loss to Towson on Saturday.
Norfolk State Spartans (1-1, 0-0 MEAC) vs. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (1-1, 0-0 Sun Belt)

The Spartans are coming off a 44-21 win over Virginia State in the Battle of the States on Saturday for their first win of the season, and the Spartans picked up some recognition for their efforts in the victory. Junior quarterback Juwan Carter was named MEAC Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 203 yards and four touchdowns. He also had four carries for 30 yards. Freshman running back Kevin Johnson added 82 all-purpose yards, catching two passes for 38 yards and a touchdown to go along with seven carries for 44 yards. Johnson was named Rookie of the Week for his efforts.
North Carolina A&T State Aggies (1-1, 0-0 MEAC) vs. Charleston Southern (0-2, 0-0 Big South)

Despite being underdogs, the Aggies hung around for most of the first half before Duke pulled away for the 45-13 win on Saturday. With the loss, the Aggies fell to No. 17 in the national rankings. Receiver Elijah Bell had two catches for 52 yards.
Morgan State Bears (0-1, 0-0 MEAC) vs. James Madison Dukes (1-1, 0-0 CAA)

The Bears will be back in action following the bye week with a tough challenge, as they travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to take on the No. 2 Dukes. This will be just the second meeting between the two schools, with James Madison winning the lone matchup, 76-7 back in 1995. Linebacker Ian McBurrough had 15 tackles in the Bears’ Week 1 loss to Bowling Green. Fellow linebacker Rico Kennedy added 14 tackles (one TFL), one pass breakup, and a quarterback hurry.
Delaware State Hornets (0-1, 0-0 MEAC) vs. Lincoln Lions (Pa.) (0-1, 0-0 CIAA)

The Hornets will be back in action following the bye week. For the first time in 59 years, they will face Lincoln (Pa.), and the Hornets lead the all-time series, 12-10-1, including the last seven from 1954-60.
Florida A&M Rattlers (0-1, 0-0 MEAC) vs. Fort Valley State Wildcats (0-1, 0-0 SIAC)
Saturday, Sept. 14 Bragg Memorial Stadium Tallahassee, Fla. 6 p.m.
 
The Rattlers will also resume their schedule following the bye week. This will be the 12th meeting between the two schools. FAMU has dominated, winning 10 of the previous 11 match-ups. This will be FAMU’s 2019 home opener.
