NORFOLK, Va., Aug. 12, 2019—The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) has named Julius Reynolds from North Carolina A&T State University as the 2019 Male Student-Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced today.
“I would like to congratulate Julius Reynolds,” Commissioner Dr. Dennis Thomas said. “He’s had an absolutely phenomenal career at North Carolina A&T State University, not only as a student-athlete, but academically and in extracurricular activities as well. I wish him continued success and I would like to thank his family and all of the people who had a positive influence on him.”
Reynolds competed in the sport of football for four seasons, and he played a vital role in helping lead the Aggies to three MEAC championships, three Celebration Bowl titles, three Black College Football National Championships and one NCAA playoff bid.
This past season, Reynolds had 22 total tackles (18 solo), four of which were for loss, and a sack. He also had a pair of interceptions, tied for second most on the team, as part of an Aggies defense that ranked third nationally in total defense, fourth in rushing defense and fifth in scoring defense.
As a two-year team captain, Reynolds exhibited the ability to lead by example on the field and in the classroom, majoring in Biology with the goal of becoming a doctor.
Reynolds was the backbone of what community involvement means to North Carolina A&T State University. His passion for youth was a catalyst that helped organize trips to the Children’s Hospital of Atlanta during trips to the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl.
His teammates rallied around the idea and gladly stepped in to participate.
Campus administrators rave at how Reynolds demonstrated to younger student-athletes the importance of staying focused on academics. As a graduate assistant, Reynolds made time to help students in need of extra assistance in the classroom while maintaining a GPA of 3.6.
His positive attitude and gritty approach allowed him to find his way and stay on the field knowing that he was not considered the star of the team. His tenacity never wavered, and he remained steadfast in knowing he had invested solid leadership skills and enthusiastic work ethic, leaving a positive and memorable legacy at North Carolina A&T State University.
