Bullock Hired to Lead Spartan Volleyball

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State Athletics Department has announced that Kathy Bullock has been hired to serve as the head coach of the Spartan volleyball program. Bullock has spent 25 years as a head coach at the NCAA level, including more than 20 at two Division I HBCUs.

Bullock held head coaching positions at North Carolina A&T State for 10 years from 1994-2003, and then for 13 seasons at Tennessee State from 2004-16. She most recently served as head coach at Winston-Salem State in 2018 and Greensboro College in 2017.

"I would like to thank God for blessing me with yet another opportunity to be a vessel for young people. I am excited and ready to elevate the program here at Norfolk State University," Bullock said. "Additionally, I wanted to thank the athletics administration for believing in my mission for this program. I look forward to bringing championships to the Spartan family. Behold! The Green and Gold!"

Bullock has more than 350 victories to her ledger, including 177 as the all-time winningest coach at Tennessee State. She led the Tigers to the OVC Championship and the NCAA Tournament in 2007 and an OVC regular season championship in 2005. She coached TSU to three 20-win seasons and seven winning seasons overall.

The 2005 TSU squad posted school records for overall wins (22-11) and OVC victories (14-2). The team's 17-win improvement from Bullock's first season marked the biggest turnaround at the D-I level that year.

She also led North Carolina A&T State to five winning seasons and a pair of MEAC Southern Division titles. Included in there was a school record 24 wins in 2001 and another 20-win season in 2002. The Aggies advanced to the 1998 MEAC Championship match under her guidance as well.

Bullock coached seven first-team All-MEAC honorees and 1998 MEAC Player of the Year Vania Blake at N.C. A&T. She also mentored 19 All-OVC selections, 2011 OVC Player of the Year Shaquita Williams and 2016 OVC Defensive Player of the Year Madison Halterman during her time at Tennessee State.

NSU finished 4-17 overall last season and 3-7 in the MEAC Northern Division. The Spartans did not lose any seniors off last year's team and will bring back 15 players in addition to five newcomers.
