FAMU Downs North Top Seed Norfolk State in Comeback

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. -- Florida A&M came from behind in the late innings to defeat Northern Division top seed Norfolk State 9-5 at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex on Thursday, day two of the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship.

The Rattlers will face rival Bethune-Cookman on Friday at 12 p.m., while the Spartans fell into the loser's bracket for a Thursday evening elimination contest against North Carolina Central.

Norfolk State led 3-1 after a two-run single from Lily Potter in the fifth inning, but FAMU responded by pushing across five runs in the top of the sixth. Hera Varmah was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to start the scoring, and Tyra Bowers followed with a two-run single to give the Rattlers a 4-3 lead.

Jamesia Stoudemire then reached on an error to score another run.

FAMU scored three more runs in the seventh, rendering the run the Spartans scored in the sixth -- on a Jazzmaine Hammond home run -- and the seventh -- on a Kylee Lopez RBI single -- moot.

Kyaira Brown was 3-for-4 at the plate, and Barmah had three RBIs to lead FAMU, which also benefited from five Norfolk State errors. Brown also struck out five in picking up her 15th win of the season.
