BALTIMORE – Coppin State’s softball team split a key MEAC doubleheader with Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles dropped a 4-3 decision in the opener before taking the nightcap, 5-3.

How it Happened (Game 1)
- Coppin took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Patricia Soria scored from third on a passed ball. Soria led off the game with a triple to center field.
- Maryland Eastern Shore took a 2-1 lead after scoring a pair in the top of the second but the Eagles tied it up on a RBI single by Alexis Genovese. Scoring on the base knock was Megan Narvaez from second after a one-out double.
- Both teams went scoreless in the third but the Hawks scored two more in the fourth while CSU left runners stranded the fourth and fifth.
- Nia Bowe homered to left center to cut the deficit to 4-3 but the Eagles were unable to get over the hump.
Inside the Numbers (Game 1)
- Six different Coppin players had one hit apiece while Nia Bowe was the lone Eagles player to reach safely twice while also drawing a walk.
- Madison Didion took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in 6.0 innings while striking out four before Lexi Flom allowed just one hit while fanning one in her lone inning.
How it Happened (Game 2)
- Coppin held Maryland Eastern Shore scoreless through the first four innings which included a double play ball in the first inning.
- The Eagles did not score in the first but Brissa Alvarado helped her own cause in the circle with a sacrifice fly in the second. Desiree Carrizosa scored on the play after pinch running for Cayla Brown who doubled to lead off the frame. She advanced to third on a groundout.
- CSU put a three spot on the scoreboard in the fourth with a RBI single by Megan Narvaez and a two-run single by Kylie Flagler.
- UMES took advantage of a defensive error by the Eagles to get on the board in the fifth but Alvarado got a groundout to prevent further damage.
- Patricia Soria got the run back for the Eagles in the sixth, doubling to right field to plate Alvarado to make it a 5-1 score.
- The Hawks scored twice in the seventh but Alvarado got a flyout to seal the win.

Bethune-Cookman 10, South Carolina State 0
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Alexis Bermudezthrew a one-hit shutout with a career-high 10 strikeouts as Bethune-Cookman downed South Carolina State 10-0 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game Saturday at Sunnyland Park.
Game two of the doubleheader was suspended and will be resumed Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m. with Bethune-Cookman leading 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth. The series finale will follow.
Bermudez, the 2018 MEAC Rookie Of The Year, retired the first 10 SCSU batters en route to her third shutout of the season.
BCU (13-25 overall, 4-0 MEAC) needed just two hits to score seven third inning runs. The Wildcats drew eight walks and stole 10 bases.
