SAVANNAH, Ga., April 30, 2019 – Augusta University won its fifth straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) men’s golf championship on Tuesday at Crosswinds Golf Club, finishing the two-day, three-round event with a score of 842 (279-283-280, 22-under).
The Jaguars, who have won the title in each of their five seasons as associate members of the conference, earned the MEAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Div. I Men’s Golf Championships. The NCAA Div. I Men’s Golf Selection Show will air on Wednesday, May 1 at 9 p.m. on Golf Channel.
Augusta’s Alex van Wyk, who was the 36-hole leader, took home the individual title after shooting a 1-under 71 on Tuesday – following up on Monday’s low of 68. Van Wyk had back-to-back birdies on the front nine – on six and seven – and he eagled the 10
th before bogeying 15 and 16.
Teammate Gustav Andersson started the round tied for fifth, but a 5-under 67 in the final round propelled Andersson into a second-place finish at 5-under for the tournament. Jake Lane from Bethune-Cookman came in third, shooting 4-under for the tournament, thanks in large part to making six birdies in the final round to shoot a 69.
Rounding out the top five and also shooting under par were Augusta’s Alex Shead (3-under) and Adam Walden (2-under). Shead had three brides and an eagle on his way to a final-round 71 and Walden made four birdies in a row on 7 thru 10 for a 1-under round.
Bethune-Cookman’s Marcus Sunlof eagled the 18
th hole to secure a final score of even-par 72 for the round and tournament.
Van Wyk was named the tournament’s Outstanding Performer, while Jack O’Keefe was again named the Outstanding Coach.
Behind Augusta, Bethune-Cookman finished second in the team standings with an even-par 864 (282-292-290), while Savannah State was third at a 31-over 895 (300-300-295) and North Carolina A&T State (312-305-305=922, +58) was fourth.
Maryland Eastern Shore (333-326-317=976, +122) and North Carolina Central (330-345-340=1015, +151) rounded out the six-team field.
