MEAC Completes Day One of 2019 Men's Golf Championship

SAVANNAH, Ga., April 29, 2019 –
After 36 holes on the first day of the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Golf Championship at the Crosswinds Golf Club on Monday, four-time defending champion Augusta University sits atop the leaderboard.
 
The Jaguars shot a combined 14-under 562 on the opening day.
 
Alex van Wyk of Augusta holds the individual lead after the first 36 holes, which was played under sunny, breezy conditions. He shot a 6-under 138 (70-68), recording five birdies during the first 18 holes of play, and then he picked up four more birdies during the second round of the day.
 
Van Wyk was the not the only golfer to shoot under par on Monday. Augusta’s Alex Shead, the 2018 tournament’s Outstanding Performer, sits second after finishing the day at 2-under par (70-72=142), and teammate Adam Walden is at 1-under.
 
Bethune-Cookman’s Jake Lane is in a tie for third with Walden at 1-under par after the first round of play. Lane went 73-70 to get to his 143, while Walden shot 68-75.
 
Three golfers sit at even par, tied for fourth: Augusta’s Gustav Andersson, Bethune-Cookman’s Marcus Sundlof and Tirto Tamardi.
 
Three golfers round out the top 10 at 2-over: Savannah State’s Dylan Mullaney, Bethune-Cookman’s Darragh Carwford and Augusta’s Viktor Lindgren.
 
Bethune-Cookman, the 2018 runner-up, sits second in the team standings after the first day with a 2-under 574. Savannah State, at 24-over (600), is third, followed by North Carolina A&T State (617, +41), Maryland Eastern Shore (659, +83) and North Carolina Central (675, +99).
 
Tuesday’s final round will begin with the first tee time at 8 a.m. Live scoring will again be available through GolfStat.
 
The championship is free and open to the public.
