Seedings Announced for 2019 MEAC Tennis Championships

—The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) has announced the seedings for the 2019 Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships. Morgan State claimed the Northern Division’s top seed on the men’s side, with South Carolina State earning the Southern Division’s No. 1 seed. On the women’s side, Norfolk State captured the Northern Division top seed, while South Carolina State notched the No. 1 slot in the Southern Division.
 
The 2019 MEAC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will be held Thursday-Saturday, April 25-27, at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.
 
Morgan State’s men claimed the Northern Division’s top seed by going a perfect 3-0 in conference play this season, clinching with a 4-0 win over Coppin State on April 15. The Spartans of Norfolk State (2-1) earned the division’s No. 2 seed, while Howard (1-2) and Coppin State (0-3) racked up the No. 3 and 4 seeds, respectively.
 
In the Southern Division, South Carolina State went a perfect 4-0 in MEAC play to clinch the top seed. North Carolina Central (3-1) wound up with the No. 2 seed, while Bethune-Cookman (2-2) and Florida A&M (1-3) rounded out the Southern Division field on the men’s side.
 
Morgan State will take on Florida A&M in quarterfinal action on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.; simultaneously, South Carolina State will take on Coppin State. The 4 p.m. matches on Thursday will be North Carolina Central vs. Howard and Norfolk State vs. Bethune-Cookman.
 
Morgan State went 5-0 in women’s conference play, but the defending champions are ineligible; thus, Norfolk State is the top seed in the Northern Division after going 4-1 in league play. Howard (3-2) be the Northern Division’s No. 2 seed, followed by Delaware State (2-3) and Coppin State (1-4).
 
In the Southern Division, South Carolina State clinched the top seed this past Wednesday, April 17, with a 6-1 win over North Carolina Central. Florida A&M (4-1) will be the No. 2 seed, while North Carolina Central (3-2) earned the No. 3 seed and Bethune-Cookman (2-3) will be the No. 4 seed.
 
The Spartans will kick off action on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. against Bethune-Cookman; at the same time, South Carolina State will take on Coppin State. Florida A&M vs. Delaware State and North Carolina Central vs. Howard will follow at 11 a.m.
 
Only the top four teams in each division compete in the MEAC Tennis Championships. For the men, North Carolina A&T State was eliminated. Maryland Eastern Shore, North Carolina A&T State and Savannah State were eliminated on the women’s side.
 
The 2019 MEAC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will begin with women’s quarterfinal action on Thursday at 8:30 a.m., while the men’s quarterfinal matches will begin at 1:30 p.m. Semifinal action begins at 9 a.m. on Friday with the women’s matches; men’s semifinals will start at 12 p.m.
 
Saturday’s championship matches will kick off at 9 a.m. for the women and 12 p.m. for the men.
 
The championship is free and open to the public.
