MEAC Announces Weekly Softball Honors

NORFOLK, Va., April 22, 2019 – Bethune-Cookman’s Kaiya Epps-Lee was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon. Norfolk State’s Skylar Swain was selected as Pitcher of the Week and teammate Brissa Alvarado was selected as Rookie of the Week.
 
Epps-Lee (OF, Jr., Lancaster, Calif.) finished the week with a .555 batting average, going 5-for-9 at the plate. She drove in four runs while scoring three times herself. Epps-Lee recorded a home run and helped lead the Wildcats to three wins.
 
Swain (P, So., Portsmouth, Va.) recorded a 0.00 ERA against Delaware State this past week, going the distance and striking out five in the Spartans’ win. The only run she gave up in the outing was unearned.
 
Alvarado (P/3B, Fr., Rialto, Calif.) was 2-for-5 at the plate for a batting average of .400 and threw nine innings for a 7-3 win over Howard to record a 1.56 ERA for the week. Alvarado recorded an RBI while allowing just seven hits and two earned runs. She also struck out two batters in the circle.
 
Other Top Performers
Kaira Cabato (B-CU) finished the week with a .333 batting average, going 3-for-9 at the plate. She also had a stolen base and had four assists.
 
Destiny Enriquez (B-CU) finished the week with a 1.26 ERA and picked up two wins. In 11.1 innings of work, she allowed just three runs (two earned). She also struck out four batters.
 
Cayla Brown (CSU) was 3-for-8 at the plate over the weekend for a .375 batting average with six RBIs and a run scored.
 
Madison Didion (CSU) scattered four hits and one earned run, striking out nine against Howard.
 
Kalita Dennis (HOW) was 3-for-6 over the past week with an RBI and a run scored.
 
Anissa Derifield (MDES) finished last week with a .474 batting average going 9-for-14 at the plate. She scored two runs while driving in a run.
 
Breana Florez (MDES) recorded a .429 batting average by going 6-for-14 at the plate. Florez recorded seven RBIs, scored six runs, three and a home run.
 
Damali Young (MSU) batted .571 for the week, going 4-for-7 at the plate to help the Bears to a 1-1 record.
 
Nikki Valera (NCAT) went 3-for-10 at the plate with a .300 batting average and scored a run.
 
Kiara Hurley (NCCU) went 2-0 last week with a 2.62 ERA, throwing two complete game with one shutout in 16 innings pitched.
 
Jazzmaine Hammond (NSU) had a .400 batting average going 4-for-10 from the plate. Hammond had four RBIs and scored two runs.
 
Gabby Vaughan (NSU) was 4-for-11 from the plate for a .361 batting average. She drove in three runs and scored a run.
