DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –  Bethune-Cookman swept a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference South Division doubleheader from North Carolina A&T Saturday by scores of 3-0 and 5-3 at Sunnyland Park.

Alexis Bermudez threw a four-hit shutout and Kaiya Epps-Lee hit a two-run homer to pace BCU (19-26 overall, 10-1 MEAC) in the opener while Epps-Lee had three hits in the nightcap to help the Wildcats complete the sweep over the Aggies (8-23, 4-7).

GAME 1
Bermudez improved to 11-17 overall (8-1 in conference play) with her seventh shutout of the season. She walked one, struck out nine, and didn't allow an Aggie runner to get past second.

Epps-Lee's two-out homer to right center in the first would be all the offense BCU needed. Brianna Sanders added an insurance run in the fourth when she tripled and scored on an error.

It was the second home run of the season for Epps-Lee, the first a grand slam coming against LIU-Brooklyn back on Feb. 15.

GAME 2
An first-inning infield throwing error that allowed Quinah Mitchell to score from first and Cheyenne Smith to reach third set the tone for BCU in the second game. Brianna Paysinger's RBI double and an Epps-Lee RBI single helped BCU take the early 3-0 lead.

BCU added two runs in the third for a 5-0 advantage.

Sasha Killings added two hits for BCU. Destiny Enriquez (6-6) picked up the win, scattering seven hits.

Delaware State 6, Norfolk State 1

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State softball team fell to Delaware State by a 6-1 score on Saturday afternoon in the last game of the series at Hornets’ Nest field. The loss kept NSU from clinching at least a share of the division title after Morgan State’s game with Maryland Eastern Shore was postponed.

The Spartans were unable to complete the series sweep against the Hornets after winning both games on Friday. Like NSU did in both games the day before, DSU used a five-run inning to secure the win. The loss dropped the Spartans to 10-2 in the division as well as 23-16 overall.

With only three games left this year, the Spartans own a two-and-a-half game lead over MSU (7-4). NSU can clinch at least a share of the division title with a win in one of its last three games next weekend at home against Howard or a loss by Morgan State to Coppin State next weekend as well.

Saturday’s doubleheader between NSU and Howard will begin at 1 p.m. at the NSU Softball Field, and Senior Day will take place next Sunday before the teams play at noon.

DSU improved to 7-30 on the year and 4-8 in the MEAC. The Hornets did so thanks to a five-run second inning, the last time either team scored in the game.

They got an RBI single in the first, and NSU senior Hunter Halford hit a solo home run in the second to tie the score at 1-1. But in the bottom of the frame, DSU got a two-run single from Jasmine Melgoza and a two-run home run off the bat of Jade King for a 6-1 run lead.

The Spartans had chances, sometimes thanks to errors on Delaware State. They left two runners on base in the fifth and also had the bases loaded in the sixth. But the Hornets turned a double play in both the sixth and seventh innings to keep NSU at just one run for the contest.
