CARY, N.C. — Bethune-Cookman University scored five runs in the first inning and then held host North Carolina Central University hitless in securing an 8-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division victory early Tuesday at Thomas Brooks Park.
 
Sophomore Alexis Bermudez – the reigning MEAC Rookie of the Year – tossed the run-ruled shortened no-hitter for the Wildcats. Bermudez (10-16) only issued two walks in her stellar performance that included a pair of strikeouts.
 
Sophomores Caroline Campbell and Kaitlyn Macon drew the two base on balls for the Lady Eagles. Junior Dalika Wallace was the only other NCCU batter to reach base because of a fielding error by the third baseman in the first.
 
Freshman Kaira Cabato had the biggest hit of the day for the visitors, with a bases-clearing, 3-run double to cap BCU’s early scoring in the first.

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team fell to the UMBC Retrievers in both games of their doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon (April 16) at Hawk Field.
 
In game one, the Hawks (6-25) were unable to get a hit in a 13-0 defeat. The only Hawks to reach base in the game were freshman Anissa Derifield (Woodbridge, VA), who drew two walks, and senior Breana Florez (Houston, TX) drew a walk.
 
In game two, freshman Rachel Gingrich (Landisburg, PA) scored the Hawks first run of the day via error in the first inning to make the score 3-1. One inning later, Gingrich hit a single to the right center gap to score junior Kamryn Lanier (Chester, VA) to close the UMBC lead to 3-2.
 
With the Retrievers leading 4-2 in the fifth inning, senior Kiana Peterson (Willingboro, NJ) doubled to left center to score Gingrich to close the lead to one.
 
UMBC got one run in the seventh inning to take a 5-3 advantage to the bottom of the frame. Eastern Shore would mount a rally as they had the winning run up to bat two separate times, but they were unable to capitalize.

Drexel 9, Delaware State 3

Dover, Del. --- Drexel combined for 30 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Delaware State this afternoon. The Dragons collected 13 hits in an 11-1 victory in the opener and tallied 17 base knocks to highlight their 9-3 win in the nightcap.
 
Drexel’s Kristi DiMeo and Hannah Walker each had two hits and three runs batted in game one.
 
The Dragons opened the scoring with six runs in the top of the second inning off DSU starter Brianna Baker. DiMeo and Linda Rush each had two-run doubles, while Walker singled in a run in the inning.
 
The Hornets scored their lone run in the third. Carissa Thorne singled with one out and advanced to third on a double by Jasmine Melgoza.  Thorne crossed the plate on a ground out by Jonah Cunnigan to cut the Dragons lead to 6-1.
 
Drexel blew the game open with five runs in the fourth inning. DiMeo drove in her third run of the game on a one-out triple, while Walker doubled in two fifth inning runs.
 
The game ended after Delaware State batted in the fifth due to the eight-run rule.
 
Meghan Conroy (3-2) pitched a complete game to earn the win for the Dragons.
 
Rush had two hits and three RBI, while Walker, Reilly Swanson and Megan Trivelpiece contributed three hits each to lead Drexel in the nightcap.

Coppin State’s softball team snapped a five-season losing streak to Mount St. Mary’s with a 6-5 victory in game one of a doubleheader on Tuesday night, but fell in the nightcap, 15-7.

How it Happened (Game 1)
  • Mount St. Mary’s got out a 2-0 lead with a run in the second and third innings before Coppin scored three in the third to take its first lead of the game.
  • The first run came on an RBI double by Cayla Brown which scored pinch runner Jaylene Sierra.  Sierra replaced Megan Narvaez who had walked to start the inning before reaching scoring position after Patricia Soria laid down a sac bunt.  Cloe Ochoa then walked and Kylie Flagler was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Soraya Valdez-Frick drove in two runs with a double to the gap in right center.
  • Both teams went scoreless in the fourth and the Eagles put another three spot on the board in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead. Hatika James had the big hit of the inning with a three-run triple to right center, scoring Brown, Flagler and Valdez-Frick.
  • Starting pitcher Madison Didion escaped a bases loaded jam unscathed in the sixth and stranded two runners in the seventh before The Mount cut the lead to 6-5 with two runs.
Inside the Numbers (Game 1)
  • Cayla Brown was the lone Coppin player with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Hatika James drove in three runs with a hit and a walk while Soraya Valdez-Frick drove in two runs.
  • Madison Didion received the win, allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out nine in the complete game.
How it Happened (Game 2)
  • The nightcap started like the first with Mount St. Mary’s getting out to a 2-0 lead, but it got another two runs in the third to take a 4-0 lead.
  • Coppin cut the deficit in half with two runs in the third as Nia Bowe and Brissa Alvarado both drew walks with the bases loaded.
  • Mount St. Mary’s came right back with four runs off Alvarado in the fourth before CSU scored two more in the fifth to cut it back down to 8-4.  Alvarado helped her own cause in the frame with an RBI single before a fielding error allowed Bowe to score once again.
  • The final two innings saw a combined seven errors which led to ten combined runs.
  • The Mount extended its lead to 11-4 with three runs on one hit and two errors in the sixth before Coppin scored one in its half as Cayla Brown reached on an error to score Soraya Valdez-Frick who singled to lead off the frame and got to second on another single by Megan Narvaez.
