MEAC Announces Weekly Women's Tennis Honors

NORFOLK, Va., April 10, 2019Morgan State senior Peggy Rooke was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Bethune-Cookman’s Michelle Ncube was named Rookie of the Week.
 
Rooke (Sr., Malmo, Sweden) went a combined 6-0 for the week in three matches at No. 2 singles, while splitting time at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles with partner Asmara Rose. She began the week with a 6-2 doubles win over opponents of Delaware State, before earning a pair of 6-3 victories over Anastasia Belkina. She then paired again with Rose, as the two defeated Howard 6-1 before she captured a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Nicole Hutchison. She then ended the week with a doubles victory over Naz Karagoz and Zoe Fraser of Norfolk State, before capping off the week with a 7-6, 7-5 singles win over the Spartans’ Paula Fortuno.
 
Ncube (Fr., Harare, Zimbabwe) went 2-0 in singles play this past week at the No. 1 position, while also winning both of her doubles matches. She opened with a 4-6, 6-3, 5-3 win over Miali Rakotondrazafy on Thursday, while also pairing with Rehaana Butt for a 6-4 doubles win. She then upended Savannah State’s Sofia Shut’Ko 6-0, 6-1 on Sunday, while she and Butt won doubles 6-0.

Other Top Performers
Karen Romero (B-CU) went 2-0 in the No. 5 singles spot in matches against Florida A&M and Savannah State.

Dominique Jackson (HOW) took the singles win over Yelysaveta Bessonova of Delaware State in the No. 6 singles spot.
 
Yassmine Khiri (HOW) defeated Delaware State’s Sofia Rachi 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles position.
 
Naz Karago (NSU) went 2-0 in singles on the week, finishing in the number one spot against Coppin State and Morgan State, extending her singles winning streak to seven matches.
