NORFOLK, Va., March 5, 2019Howard sophomore Jayla Thornton was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by the U.S. Marines, the conference office announced today. Coppin State’s Jalynda Salley earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Howard junior Imani Bryant was named Defensive Player of the Week.
 
Thornton (5-9, G, So., Newark, N.J.) dropped a career-high 33 points Saturday night in a blowout win at Savannah State, setting a new program record for most made 3-pointers in a game with nine. In all, the Bison made 13 3-pointers that night, also a program record, and Thornton broke the single-season program record for made 3-pointers with 89. For the game, she went 11-for-27 from the floor and 9-for-18 from distance. Thornton also had six rebounds, a steal and an assist.
 
Salley (6-3, C, Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio) scored a game-high 17 points on 8-for-13 shooting on Saturday as the Eagles upset Norfolk State on the road. She also grabbed six rebounds and blocked a shot.
 
Bryant (6-1, F, Jr., Berkeley, Calif.) had an all-around strong game defensively in the Bison’s blowout win over Savannah State on Saturday. She grabbed 11 rebounds – six of which came on the defensive end – on top of blocking three shots and grabbing three steals.

Other Top Performers
Angel Golden (B-CU) had 17 points against South Carolina State.
 
Camary Harris (B-CU) recorded nine points and 10 boards against South Carolina State.
 
NaJai Pollard (DSU) averaged 24.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in two games, both wins, and she dropped 28 against Morgan State.
 
Krislyn Marsh (HOW) had 14 points and four assists against Savannah State.
 
Adre’onia Coleman (MSU) dropped 19 points in a win over Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
Ashia McCalla (MSU) scored 18 points against Delaware State.
 
Mikaya Wilson (NCAT) dropped 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds against Florida A&M.
 
Khadedra Croker (NSU) blocked four shots against Coppin State.
 
Taylor Brown (SCSU) had 22 points and 12 rebounds in an upset win over Bethune-Cookman.
