NORFOLK, Va. – March 5, 2019 –
Delaware State’s Jasmine Melgoza was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday morning.
North Carolina Central’s Kiara Hurley was selected as Pitcher of the Week and
Delaware State’s Jonah Cunnigan was selected as Rookie of the Week.
Melgoza (IF, So., Huntington Beach, Calif.) went 10-for-17 at the plate for a .588 batting average over the weekend. She had a home run, two doubles and four runs scored in five games at the Pirate Invitational. In Delaware State’s 6-5 win over St. Peter’s, she was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored.
Hurley (P, So., Maumee, Ohio) picked up three wins over the weekend in 22.2 innings pitched with 11 strikeouts and a 1.24 ERA. She allowed only four earned runs while walking just three batter in four games. In the Lady Eagles’ win over Saint Peter’s, Hurley allowed just one hit with five strikeouts in a five-inning shutout.
Cunnigan (OF, Fr., Torrence, Calif.) went 8-for-14 with a .571 batting average over the weekend. She scored four runs and stole three bases for the week and went 5-for-6 in two games on Sunday.
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
Destiny Enriquez (B-CU) went 1-0 last week after seeing action in all four games for the Wildcats. She pitched 10.2 innings, allowing just six hit and three runs.
Carrington Robinson (B-CU) was 1-for-3 for the weekend with a .333 batting average.
Jacki Smith (B-CU) finished the weekend with a team-high .571 batting average. She had eight hits, one RBI, five stolen bases and a double for the Wildcats.
Melanie Aguilera (CSU) went 4-for-6 over the weekend and had a team-high .667 batting average.
Madison Didion (CSU) allowed just one run on hits and struck out six in a complete-game win over Arkansas Pine-Bluff. She retired 18 straight at one point and 20 of the last 21 batters.
Patricia Soria (CSU) had six hits in 15 at-bats for a .400 batting average, scoring four runs and hitting three doubles.
Kyaira Brown (FAMU) went 2-0 in the circle last week and recorded an ERA of 2.85 allowing just eight runs in 19.2 innings of work with nine strikeouts. In a win over Georgia Southern, she allowed just one run and two strikeouts.
Alexis Day (FAMU) finished with a .467 batting average through five game for the Rattlers. She was 7-for-15, scoring two runs while hitting three doubles, a home run and collecting six RBIs.
Mackenzie Soper (HOW) was 3-for-6 for the weekend with .500 batting average with a double.
Kamryn Tillman (HOW) went 3-for-9 over the weekend with a .333 batting average, and she also had three RBIs, a double and a homerun for the Bison.
Jordan Kelly (MDES) went 6-for-11 over the weekend with an RBI and she scored a run.
Kiana Peterson (MDES) went 6-for-8 over the weekend with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Dalika Wallace (NCCU) had a .429 batting average in five games, going 6-for-14 with two doubles and a home run. Wallace also scored four runs and collected eight RBIs. In the Eagles’ 7-2 win over Delaware State, she collected five RBIs with a three-run home run.
Hunter Halford (NSU) picked up two wins last week and finished with a 2.10 ERA in 20.0 innings in the circle with 10 strikeouts. In the win over St. Bonaventure, she allowed just one run with three strikeouts.
Makena Heimann (NSU) was 3-for-12 scoring two runs, recording a RBI and finishing with a .250 batting average.
Tuli Iosefa (NSU) went 6-for-14 over the weekend to bat .429. She also scored two runs, had seven RBIs, three doubles and a home run for the Spartans. In Norfolk State’s win over Delaware, she went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, two doubles and a run scored.
