MEAC Announces Weekly Men's Basketball Honors

NORFOLK, Va., March 5, 2019–The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced today that sophomore guard RJ Cole of Howard has been selected as its Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by the U.S. Marines.  Meanwhile, senior forward Shawntrez Davis of Bethune-Cookman captured MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors as freshman guard C.J. Kelly of Norfolk State won MEAC Rookie of the Week honors.
 
Cole (6-1, So., G, Union, N.J.) scored 23 points while grabbing six rebounds, five assists and three steals against Savannah State last Saturday, an 81-76 win for the Bison. He connected on five of 10 3-pointers and eight of 17 shots from the floor. Cole’s 23 points scored marked his 19th 20-point game of the season.
 
Davis (6-9, Sr., F, Atlanta, Ga.) had a game-high 13 rebounds with two blocked shots and a steal in the Wildcats’ 98-95 overtime win over South Carolina State on Saturday. He also had a season-high five assists while scoring 10 points.
 
Kelly (6-5, r-Fr., G, Long Island, N.Y.) averaged 5.5 points, 1.0 rebounds, 0.5 blocked shots and 0.5 rebounds in the Spartans’ wins over Coppin State on Saturday and Delaware State on Monday, which wrapped up the regular-season championship. All of his 11 points came in the victory over Delaware State, which marked the fifth double-digit scoring night of his career.
 
Other Top Performers
Malik Maitland (B-CU) scored 26 points while dishing out five assists and grabbing four steals, all game highs, in the Wildcats’ overtime victory over South Carolina State on Saturday. He went 10-for-17 from the field and 3-for-6 from 3-point range.
 
Chad Andrews-Fulton (CSU) had a game-high 11 rebounds while scoring seven points in the Eagles’ loss to Norfolk State on Saturday.
 
Chad Lott (HOW) grabbed 10 rebounds while blocking two shots and making one steal in the Bison’s 81-76 win over Savannah State on Saturday.  On the offensive side of the court, he scored 14 points while going 6-for-9 from the floor.
 
Gabriel Gyamfi (MDES) had four rebounds, three blocked shots and one steal in the Hawks’ win over Morgan State on Monday. He also scored 12 points.
 
Nic Thomas (NSU) averaged 15.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steal as the Spartans wrapped up the MEAC regular-season championship with wins over Coppin State on Saturday and Delaware State on Monday.
 
Steven Whitley (NSU) averaged 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 0.5 blocked shots as the Spartans’ posted wins over Coppin State and Delaware State. Offensively, he averaged 9.5 points in the victories.
