NCCU Women Narrowly Knock Off Longwood

DURHAM, N.C. -- Freshman Ivana Dragovic clinched a 4-3 non-conference women's tennis dual match victory for host North Carolina Central against Longwood at the NCCU Tennis Courts Saturday.

Dragovic topped freshman Crystal Nzewi in straight sets – 6-4, 6-3 – for the fourth and final team point for the Lady Eagles at No. 6 singles.

NCCU improved to 2-5 while handing Longwood (5-2) just its second loss.

Redshirt sophomore Frida Cnossen and sophomore Maru Berghaus pulled NCCU within one point of victory with singles wins at the top two positions of the maroon and gray lineup, respectively. Cnossen coasted to a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over junior Marija Venta. Berghaus had to rally for her 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 conquest of sophomore Yulia Almiron.

Cnossen leads the Lady Eagles with three singles wins while Berghaus and Dragovic each have two victories apiece.

A pair of 6-4 wins in doubles secured the first team point of NCCU in doubles. Cnossen partnered with Hannah Gaines for the win atop the doubles lineup while juniors Emily Pena and Sofia Miller were successful on the third court.

Both victorious doubles tandems of Cnossen/Gaines and Miller/Pena improved to 2-3 on the season.
