MEAC Announces Weekly Women's Tennis Honors

NORFOLK, Va., March 27, 2019Norfolk State graduate student Naz Karagoz was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Bethune-Cookman’s Michelle Ncube was named Rookie of the Week.
 
Karagoz (Gr., Instanbul, Turkey) went undefeated in two matches securing a 2-0 start for the Spartans in the MEAC Northern Division. She clinched two straight-set wins over Maryland Eastern Shore’s Sarah Adewumi (6-0, 6-0) and Delaware State’s Sofia Rachi (6-3, 6-1), while also teaming up with Zoe Fraser to dominate in doubles, winning both of those matches as well.
 
Ncube (Fr., Harare, Zimbabwe) went 4-0 on the weekend, clinching 7-5, 6-4 wins over North Carolina A&T State’s Fabiana Ramirez (6-2, 6-3) and North Carolina Central’s Frida Cnossen (6-2, 6-3) in singles, while also going 2-0 in doubles over North Carolina A&T State and North Carolina Central.

Other Top Performers
Nicole Hutchinson (HOW) teamed with Christina Joynes for a doubles win against Longwood.
 
Jourdan Wallace (MSU) won in straight sets against Maryland Eastern Shore’s Lauren Brown 6-0, 6-0 to begin conference play.
 
Oriane Yhehouenou (MSU) ended the week 2-1, earning two straight-set victories to open up conference play, while also securing a 6-0 No. 2 doubles win over Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
Fabiana Ramirez (NCAT) picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win over Savannah State to secure the No. 1 spot in singles, while also pairing with teammate Angelica Martinez to take the No. 1 spot in doubles as well.

Maru Berghaus (NCCU) finished 3-1 in singles on the week, beating Maryland Eastern Shore’s Sarah Adewumi 6-0, 6-0, Florida A&M’s Haleigh Porter 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) and Bethune-Cookman’s Rehaana Butt 6-4, 6-4.

Ivana Dragovic (NCCU) went 4-0 to open up conference play, picking up wins over Morgan State, Maryland Eastern Shore, Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman.
