BALTIMORE, Md. - The Norfolk State softball team won the first game of a Sunday afternoon doubleheader at Lois T. Murray Field, and despite falling in the second contest against Morgan State, the Spartans won their MEAC opening series.
 
The Spartans overcame an early 5-1 hole and later scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh to win the first contest of the day, 6-5. But in game 2, the Bears broke a tie in the bottom of the sixth and held on for a victory by the same score, 6-5.
 
The trio of senior Kylee Lopez, junior Shelby DesChamps and sophomore Tuli Iosefa played a big part on offense on Sunday as NSU won two of three in the series after also defeating the Bears on Saturday. The Spartans now sit 14-12 overall and 2-1 in the MEAC.
 
Iosefa drove in a pair of runs in each game, and Lopez had three runs and three RBI over the course of the day. DesChamps also scored three runs between the two games.

Bethune-Cookman 7, Savannah State 5
 
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Jackie Smith and Quianah Mitchell each had three hits, and Briana Paysinger and Sasha Killings each had a big hit as Bethune-Cookman downed Savannah State 7-5 to conclude a three-game sweep of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division series Sunday.
 
Killings smacked a three-run homer in the first, while Paysinger drove a double down the right field line down for two runs in the second that gave the Wildcats (12-22 overall, 3-0 MEAC) an early 5-2 lead.
 
Kaiya Epps-Lee drove in Smith in the sixth while Briana Sanders scored on Mitchell's infield single in the seventh.

Florida A&M 6, North Carolina Central 1
 
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Junior third baseman Dalika Wallaceprovided the North Carolina Central University softball team with an early lead after hitting a solo home run, but host Florida A&M University kept the Lady Eagles off the scoreboard from that point and rallied to win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) three-game series finale 6-1 on Sunday afternoon.
 
NCCU (9-18 Overall, 0-3 MEAC) left seven runners on base, including five stranded in scoring position as the Lady Eagles outhit the Rattlers 9-8.
 
Florida A&M (11-21, 3-0) – the preseason favorites to win the MEAC Southern Division – used back-to-back, two-out RBI-singles in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good and a four-hit fifth inning resulted in the other four runs for the victors. Senior Alexis Day capped the Rattlers scoring with a two-run, inside-the-park home run belted down the right field line.
 
The maroon and gray had nine of the first 11 hits on the day, putting runners in scoring position each of the first five innings. Senior Aleyah Evans and sophomore Olivia Daniel both tallied two hits.

Delaware State 4, Coppin State 3
 
DOVER, Del. – Coppin State dropped a pair of one-run games at MEAC rival Delaware State on Sunday at the Hornet’s Nest.  DSU took the opener, 4-3, before winning game two, 3-2 in a ten-inning affair.

  • Coppin rallied from a 3-0 deficit after three innings to tie score in the fourth with three runs of its own.
  • Brissa Alvarado got the rally started with a two-out single before being replaced by pinch runner Lexi Flom.  Megan Narvaez then doubled to the gap in right center, allowing Flom to score.  Nia Bowe then tied the score with her second home run of the season to center field.
  • The score remained tied until the bottom of the seventh when Delaware State got a walkoff single.

SALISBURY, Maryland — After 19 games, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team has already tied their win total of a season ago that took 39 games to attain after a split with the Howard University Bison on Sunday afternoon (March 24) at Salisbury University. The Bison won game one 7-5. The Hawks won game two 7-6.
 
“It was really nice to be home and playing after the long spring break on the road,” head coach Karla Powell said. “It stinks that some of our field was under water but the girls adjusted to playing at Salisbury University as they have a great field.”
 
Maryland Eastern Shore (4-15, 1-1) fell behind in game one 2-0 in the first inning, but they cut into the lead in the bottom of the inning. Senior Daeshia Jones (Teaneck, NJ) led off the inning with a single and then stole a base. Classmate Kiana Peterson (Willingboro, NJ) would reach base two batters later by error and that would allow Jones to score.
 
In the fourth inning, the Hawks trailed 5-1 but would cut the lead in half. Freshman Jordan Kelly (Bridgeton, NJ) singled and stole a base to get to second. Senior Breana Florez (Houston, TX) drove her in to score on a double to center field. Freshman Anissa Derifield (Woodbridge, VA) would get a pinch hit single to move Florez to third and sophomore Allison Gingrich (Landisburg, PA) would come up and ground out to the first basemen to bring Florez in to score.
