CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Norfolk State softball team rallied to top Delaware in extra innings before falling to host Virginia on Saturday afternoon in the Cavalier Classic at The Park.
 
The second day of the tournament saw the Spartans top the Blue Hens 7-6 in eight innings after coming back from a 4-1 deficit. Immediately afterwards, Virginia broke the game open in the fourth and ended the contest on the eight-run rule in a 10-2 victory.
 
NSU trailed Delaware 4-0 early on, but the Spartans took a one-run lead thanks to a four-run fifth. Delaware tied it up with an unearned in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, where the Spartans claimed the win.
 
Virginia (7-9) scored five runs in the fourth inning to break open what had been a one-run game. The Cavaliers added two more runs in the sixth to close it out, dropping NSU to 5-7 on the season.

HAMPTON, Va. — Sophomore starter
 Kiara Hurley picked up the win in a pair of wins for the North Carolina Central University softball team in the Pirate Invitational, downing Saint Peter's University 9-0 in five innings and topping host Hampton University 6-5 on Saturday.
 
Hurley (4-5) only allowed one earned run over 8 1/3 innings of work (0.81 ERA) as the Lady Eagles improved to 4-9 on the season. Freshman
 Olivia Daniel tallied five hits on the day while senior Aleyah Evans drove in four runs.
 
NC Central will conclude play in the Pirate Invite on Sunday against Delaware State University (11 AM) and Hampton (3 PM).
 
GAME ONE: NC Central 9, Saint Peter's 0 (5 Innings)
 
Hurley only allowed one hit over five innings – a leadoff single in the bottom of the fourth – and she recorded five strikeouts for her first shutout of the season.
 
The Lady Eagles exploded for nine runs on eight hits and four errors by the Peacocks.
 
Daniel and sophomore
 Jacobia Johnson both collected a pair of hits for the maroon and gray.
 
GAME TWO: NC Central 6, Hampton 5 
 
Hurley tossed the final 3 2/3 innings and just gave up one earned run on two hits over that span for her second win of the day.
 
NCCU jumped out to a 4-nil advantage in the first, but the Pirates scored four of their own in the third to knot the score. The early surge by the Lady Eagles included run-producing singles off the bats of Daniel, Wallace and sophomore
 Nadia Blevins along with a sac fly by junior Tamiera Sanchez.
 
A double to left by Wallace in the fifth put NCCU ahead for good in the fifth. An important insurance run was scored by junior pinch runner Tehillah Duffy on a groundout by Sanchez as a pair of singles by Hampton in the home half of the half pulled the hosts within one run again. However, after that run scored Hurley retired the next seven Pirates in order to keep the Lady Eagles ahead.

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman Softball split a pair of games Saturday afternoon as the Wildcats fell to Penn (5-1) before bouncing back to defeat Binghamton (2-1) as part of the Under Armour Classic at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex.
 
PENN 5, BETHUNE-COOKMAN 1
Bethune-Cookman was limited to just two hits Saturday afternoon, falling to Penn by a score of 5-1 in day two action of the Under Armour Classic at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex.
 
Bethune-Cookman (4-14) got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead.
 
Catcher
 Kayla Traylor reached on an error, allowing senior first baseman Brianna Sanders to score from second on the play, after the California native reached on a walk to lead off the inning.
 
Penn (2-2) answered with a run to bring the game level in the bottom of the inning.
 
BETHUNE-COOKMAN 2, BINGHAMTON 1
Bethune-Cookman scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to erase an earl deficit and defeat Binghamton, 2-1 in day two action of the Under Armour Classic at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex. For the Wildcats, the victory allowed them to finish the weekend with a 1-3 record overall.
 
Binghamton (3-4) stepped out in front when Amanda Ricci – pinch running for left fielder Sophia Pappas, scored on the heels of an error charged to the BCU infield.
 
Bethune-Cookman (5-14) would continue to trail by a 1-0 deficit until the top of the fourth inning.
 
After designated player
 Alexis Bermudez walked with two outs, Carrington Robinson would pinch run for the preseason all-conference pitcher. That set the plate for first baseman Brianna Sanders to drive in a run with a double to the wall in left center, scoring Robinson to tie the game at 1-all.

Gardner-Webb 9, Md. Eastern Shore 1

BOILING SPRINGS, North Carolina — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team dropped two games in the Red and Black Softball Tournament hosted by Gardner-Webb University on Saturday (March 2). Eastern Shore fell to Wright State 8-5 and Gardner-Webb 9-1.
 
In game one versus Wright State, the Hawks jumped out to an early lead. Eastern Shore scored four runs in the first inning and one more in the second inning.
 
Senior Daeshia Jones (Teaneck, NJ) started the game with a single. After an error allowed her to move to third, fellow senior Breana Florez (Houston, TX) grounded out to the shortstop but that allowed Jones to score and give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
 
Two batters later, freshman Rachel Gingrich (Landisburg, PA) hit a single to score junior Allison Gingrich (Landisburg, PA). Following a groundout, senior Kiana Peterson (Willingboro, NJ) hit a triple to right field to bring Rachel Gingrich and sophomore Stephanie Huff (Montoursville, PA) across home plate to make the score 4-0.
 
Wright State scored one in the top of the second, but it was answered in the bottom of the inning as Huff singled down the left field line to bring Jones home and give Eastern Shore a 5-1 lead.
 
The Shore would hold a lead until the sixth inning. Maryland Eastern Shore led 5-3 going into the sixth, but Wright State would score five runs in that inning and the Hawks could not respond.
 
The Hawks had six hits in the game coming from Jones, Peterson, freshman Jordan Kelly (Bridgeton, NJ), Huff, and Allison and Rachel Gingrich.

CONWAY, Ark. – Coppin State's softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday in the final day of the University of Central Arkansas' Adam Brown Memorial Shamrock Classic.  The Eagles fell to Southeast Missouri State, 11-5 in the morning before a 10-2 defeat against Louisiana Monroe in the nightcap.

Delaware State 6, St. Peter's 5
 
Hampton, Va. (Mar. 2, 2019) ---Delaware State trailed 4-0 before rallying past St. Peter’s 6-5 on day two of the Hampton University Pirate Invitational today.

 
Jasmine Melgoza was four-for-four at the plate, while Jordan Casey was two-for-three with three runs batted in to lead the Hornets.
 
The Peahens scored a run in the first inning and three in the second before DSU came to bat in the top of the third.  
 
The Hornets scored two runs in the third to get back into the game. Melgoza started the rally with a two-out single.
 Jonah Cunnigan followed with a bunt single and each runner advanced a base on a wild pitch. Casey followed with a single to center, scoring Melgoza and Cunnigan to cut St. Peter’s lead to 4-2.
 
After the Peahens scored a run in their half of the third to open up a 5-2 lead, Delaware State catcher
 Jaelyn Baker smacked her first career home run to again pull the Hornets to within two.
