NORFOLK, Va., March 14, 2019—Bethune-Cookman, the No. 3 seed, survived a slow start and defeated Coppin State 55-49 in the quarterfinal round of the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Basketball Tournament at Norfolk Scope Arena.
The Wildcats advance to Friday’s 2 p.m. semifinal against No. 2 seed Maryland Eastern Shore.
Chance Graham, the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year, hit a 3-pointer with 5:39 to play in the first half to give Coppin State an early 12-6 lead over Bethune-Cookman. The lead would be short-lived, though, as the Wildcats only allowed Coppin State to score five points the remainder of the half.
Angel Golden, a First Team All-MEAC selection, led all scorers with 26 points. Amaya Scott had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Chasimmie Brown grabbed a team-high 11 boards.
“Defensively for us, Coppin state does a great job of running their dribble drive. We knew that we have to be really solid defensively, and we had to rebound," said Bethune-Cookman head coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis. "Rebound (today) was the key for us, so they can be one-and-done.”
The Wildcats went on an 18-2 run, sparked by a layup from Amani Ball with 8:52 to play in the second quarter, to take a 29-17 lead into the half.
B-CU was 11-for-32 (34 percent) from the floor in the first half, and for the game, the Wildcats forced 16 Coppin State turnovers that resulted in 15 points.
Brooke Fields led Coppin State with 19 points, going 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
B-CU grabbed 22 offensive rebounds and scored 14 second-chance points and finished the game with 52 rebounds.
