MIAMI, Fla. – The FAMU Women’s Softball team split a pair of games in the FAU/FIU Softball Invitational here Saturday afternoon, rallying past East Carolina, 7-5 in extra innings, before dropping a six-inning decision to Stony Brook, 11-1 at Felsberg Field.
In Saturday’s opener against ECU, FAMU fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first, before scoring twice in the top of the third on Alexis Day’s two-run single, to tie the game 2-2.
The Pirates took back the lead with a run in the bottom of the third, 3-2, but FAMU jostled back ahead, 4-3, on Hera Varmah’s leadoff solo homer, and Jamesia Stoudemire’s RBI ground out scoring Shakayla Nixon.
ECU plated a run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 4-4, to send the game to extra innings.
In Saturday’s second game, both clubs scored a run in the first for a 1-1 game, but the tide turned in the top of the third, when Stony Brook scored six runs on three hits to take the lead for good at 7-1.
SBU added a single tally in the fourth and three more in the top of the sixth to invoke the 10-run rule.
LeeAnn Hayes (0-5) took the loss, allowing five runs on three hits in two and two-thirds innings, with one strikeout. Brandice Boatwright came on in relief in the third, and finished the game with six runs allowed on seven hits in two and two-thirds innings. Kyaira Brown came on the record the final two outs of the sixth,
Athena Andrews led FAMU with two hits in Saturday’s second game.

Norfolk State 3, South Carolina State 0
NORFOLK, Va. –
Hunter Halford and
Shannon Buffington combined to allow just two hits over seven innings of work, leading the Norfolk State softball team to a 3-0 win over South Carolina State on Saturday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field.
The second day of the Spartan/Pirate Classic came to a close with NSU's first shutout of the season. The Spartans were limited to five hits but also left nine runners on base. Nevertheless, they improved to 7-10 on the season.
Halford went to 3-6 on the year after pitching the first five innings of the game. She allowed one hit and walked one over that time, while Buffington earned her first save of the season after allowing one hit over the final two frames.
South Carolina State fell to 0-8 on the season. The Bulldogs lost despite a solid outing from Jada Lake, who allowed five hits and three runs, two earned, with four walks in six innings of work.

EAST GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T bounced back after two losses on Friday with a 7-3 victory against Rider Saturday at the 2019 North Carolina A&T Softball Invitational played at the Lady Aggie Softball Complex.
Senior Zadaisha Waddell led the team with two hits and with two RBI to give her six RBI in three games this weekend while shortstop Alyssa Smith added two RBI. Waddell started the game pitching the first two innings giving up one run on two hits with three strikeouts, but freshman Hailee Cutts picked up the win (2-3) pitching the next three innings giving up two runs on one hit. Senior Mohagony Headen pitched the final two shutout innings scattering a hit with two strikeouts.
The Aggies wasted no time scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Waddell got N.C. A&T on the board with a two-run single to center field that hit the top of the fence to drive home freshman Nikki Varela and sophomore Marcey Jiles for a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Samantha Ramirez singled to center to drive home Waddell for the third run of the inning.
Rider cut in to the lead in the third inning after an RBI double and tied the game at 3 in the fifth inning after a two-run home run to center field.
