One Month Left in MEAC Hoops Regular Season

With one month remaining in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) basketball season, the Norfolk State men and North Carolina A&T State women have further established themselves as favorites for the MEAC regular-season crown.

The Spartan men are still unbeaten in MEAC play after overcoming a 24-point deficit this past Saturday at Howard and emerging with an 80-78 victory. Meanwhile, North Carolina A&T State suffered its first MEAC losses of the season at Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman, and North Carolina Central also fell at both Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M.

The Rattlers sit at 7-2 in MEAC play, with the Aggies a half-game behind them at 6-2.

With those results, combined with Coppin State's home win over rival Morgan State, Bethune-Cookman, North Carolina Central and Coppin State are tied for fourth in the standings -- with Howard and Savannah State both on their heels at 4-4.

Norfolk State's Jordan Butler was named MEAC Player of the Week, while Morgan State's Sherwyn Devonish-Prince, Jr. earned Rookie of the Week honors. Bethune-Cookman's Cletrell Pope and Florida A&M's Isaiah Martin shared Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

The Spartans will hit the road this weekend, facing Bethune-Cookman on Saturday before taking on Florida A&M on Monday. Monday's contest in Tallahassee, Fla. will be broadcast live on ESPNU at 7 p.m.

Also, Monday's game between Howard and Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach, Fla. will be streamed live on FloHoops.

The North Carolina A&T State women dominated shorthanded Bethune-Cookman on the road on Monday and sit 8-0 in league play -- while Maryland Eastern Shore continues its hot streak, having won six straight and sitting in second at 9-1. The Hawks' lone MEAC loss of the season came to North Carolina A&T State in Princess Anne, Md. on Jan. 14.

Those two teams will meet again on Monday in Greensboro, N.C.

Norfolk State fell on the road to Howard this past Saturday and has lost back-to-back MEAC games to fall to 6-2, third in the standings. Howard is 5-3 in league play and currently sits fourth -- which, if the regular season ended now, would give the Bison a first-round bye in the conference tournament.

Delaware State's NaJai Pollard and Bethune-Cookman's Angel Golden were named MEAC Co-Players of the Week, as both players eclipsed the 30-point mark this past week -- Pollard for the sixth time this season aganist South Carolina State, and Golden for the first time in her career against North Carolina Central. Mya Moye of Florida A&M was named Rookie of the Week, and Howard's Imani Bryant took home Defensive Player of the Week honors.

The Aggies will be home for two games this coming weekend -- Delaware State and Maryland Eastern Shore -- while Howard and Norfolk State will both hit the road to take on the Florida schools.
