MEAC Announces Weekly Women's Tennis Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 6, 2019—Howard University senior Christina Joynes was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. North Carolina A&T State’s Kaya Ellis was named Rookie of the Week.
 
Joynes (Sr., Memphis, Tenn.) dominated in singles and doubles in a win over Mount St. Mary’s. In her singles match-up she won both sets 6-3 and 7-5 over Mia Pittman, while in her doubles match with partner Nicole Hutchinson, she took the match 6-4 over Megan Smith and Emma Blake.
 
Ellis (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) clinched the first win of the 2019 season for the Aggies. Blazing her trail in the first set, Ellis got off to a 6-0 start against Georgia Southern’s Luisa Hrda, before falling in the second set 6-4 and then taking the match into a tiebreaker series in which she dominated 10-5.

defeated Radford’s Anastasia Belyaeva 6-3, 6-4.
 
Maru Berghaus (NCCU) defeated Johnson C. Smith’s Nija Price 6-0, 6-0, while also notching a 6-0 doubles win.
 
Ivana Dragovic (NCCU)
picked up her first collegiate win with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Johnson C. Smith’s Cierra Turner.
