MEAC Announces Weekly Men's Basketball Honors

NORFOLK, Va. - Feb. 5, 2019–Jordan Butler, Norfolk State’s stalwart senior forward, has been tabbed the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by the U.S. Marines, it was announced today. Meanwhile, defensive kingpins Cletrell Pope of Bethune-Cookman and Isaiah Martin of Florida A&M share MEAC’s Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Sherwyn Devonish-Prince, Jr. of Morgan State captures the MEAC Rookie of the Week award.
 
Butler (6-6, R-Sr., F, Hartford, Conn.) tied a career high with 21 points as the Spartans mounted a massive comeback against Howard, overcoming a 24-point deficit to tally an 80-78 victory on the road. Eighteen of Jordan’s 21 points came in the second half, including 10 points after grabbing offensive rebounds. With the 10 rebounds he grabbed, it marked his eighth career double-double. He also made three steals to go along with one assist.
 
Pope (6-9, Jr., F, Northport, Ala.) averaged 12.5 rebounds, 2.0 blocked shots and 1.0 steal while averaging 10.5 points in victories over North Carolina Central and North Carolina A&T State. He had 13 rebounds against the Aggies, including nine defensive and four defensive boards. In the NCCU game, he had 12 rebounds, including six defensive and six offensive boards, while blocking three shots.
 
Martin (7-0, Sr., C, Denver, Colo.) averaged 11.5 rebounds, 4.5 blocked shots and 1.0 steals while averaging 10.0 points as the Rattlers posted victories over North Carolina A&T State and North Carolina Central. In the win over NCAT, Martin had a 15-rebound, 12-point double-double with five blocked shots. Then, against Central, he had four blocked shots with eight rebounds, seven of which were defensive.
 
Devonish-Prince (6-1, Fr., G, Bladensburg, Md.) scored a game-high 19 points while grabbing six rebounds, dishing out two assists and making one steal in a narrow 73-71 loss to Coppin State.
 
Other Top Performers
Malik Maitland (B-CU)
averaged 16.0 points, 7.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.0 rebounds as the Wildcats registered wins over North Carolina Central and North Carolina A&T State.
 
Dejuan Clayton (CSU) scored a team-high 16 points and matched a career-high with eight assists in a come-from-behind 73-71 win over rival Morgan State on Saturday, the Eagles’ lone game of the week. Cole also collected six rebounds and one steal.

M.J. Randolph (FAMU) scored a total of 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting as the Rattlers posted wins over North Carolina A&T State and North Carolina Central.
 
Justin Ravenel (FAMU) had a 25-point outburst in Monday’s win over North Carolina Central.
 
RJ Cole (HOW) had an all-around solid game as the Bison fell to Norfolk State, scoring 29 points, including connecting on five of 10 three-pointers. He also grabbed five rebounds, dished out six assists and made two steals.
 
Bryan Urrutia (MDES) averaged 17.0 points, 7.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds over a weekend that included a win over South Carolina State and a loss to Savannah State. He scored a career-high 22 points with nine assists against the Bulldogs.
 
Raasean Davis (NCCU) averaged 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocked shots as the Eagles dropped games on the road to Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M. Offensively, he averaged 9.5 points in those two games.
