NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 26, 2019—
Coppin State senior Brooke Fields was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by the U.S. Marines, the conference office announced today.
Coppin State’s Jalynda Salley earned Rookie of the Week honors, while
North Carolina Central junior Paulina Afriyie was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Fields (5-6, G, Sr., Owings Mills, Md.) averaged 20.0 points, 9.5 assists and 2.5 steals per contest for the Eagles this past week. She opened on Saturday with a 21-point, eight-assist, four-steal effort against Howard – a game in which she also made all eight of her free throws. On Monday, she dropped 19 points to go along with a career-high 11 assists and a steal in a win over Delaware State.
Salley (6-3, C, Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio) dropped a career-high 22 points on 10-for-15 shooting against Howard on Saturday, and she grabbed 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. She then went 3-for-5 from the floor on Monday against Delaware State, giving her a combined shooting percentage for the week of 65.0 percent (13-for-20).
Afriyie (5-11, F, Jr., Bronx, N.Y.) was an all-around defensive force this past week, averaging 11.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 1.5 blocks per contest. Of her 22 rebounds this past week, 13 came on the defensive end – and Afriyie grabbed 17 boards, tying her career high, against Savannah State, a game in which she also had four steals. Against South Carolina State, she blocked three shots and grabbed two steals to go along with four defensive rebounds.

Chasimmie Brown (B-CU) grabbed 10 rebounds and four steals against Florida A&M.
Angel Golden (B-CU) hit the game-winning jumper with 9.1 seconds left at Florida A&M, the last of her 14 points.
Camary Harris (B-CU) dropped 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting against Florida A&M.
Chance Graham (CSU) averaged 13.0 rebounds in two games for the Eagles.
Lanayjha Ashe (DSU) scored 21 points in an upset win over Maryland Eastern Shore, then had 20 more against Coppin State.
Mya Moye (FAMU) had 14 points, hitting three 3-pointers, against Bethune-Cookman.
Dy’Manee Royal (FAMU) had 10 points and 11 rebounds against Bethune-Cookman.
Imani Bryant (HOW) grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked two shots against Coppin State.
Jayla Thornton (HOW) scored 23 points against Coppin State.
C’coriea Foy (NCAT) dropped 25 points in a win over South Carolina State.
Alexus Lessears (NCAT) averaged 13.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per contest in two games this past week.
