HAMPTON, Va. - Howard University junior Zion Cousins notched a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds alongside a team-best 23 points from senior all-time leading scorer Charles "CJ" Williams in Thursday night's 94-91 overtime victory over the Pirates of Hampton University.
"I am so happy for our guys, they have preserved through some challenging games against some challenging opposite," said head coach Kenny Blakeney. "Our guys haven't quit, they haven't given up and they haven't stopped striving for each next step. And all those things allowed us to beat a very solid Hampton squad and halt our unfortunate streak."
Along with the contributions of Cousins and Williams, Kyle Foster, Wayne Bristol and Khalil Robinson also scored in double figures with 13 points, 17 pts. and 10 pts., respectively. Nate Garvey closed the game scoring 4 of his 8 points in overtime to help seal the victory as well contributing six boards and four assists in the contest.
"I am so happy for Nate and CJ who were successful for their last matchup against Hampton," said Blakeney. "
While the game consisted of 17 ties and 16 leads changes, it was the final four minutes of regulation play that left Bison and Pirates fans on the edge of their seats. With Hampton up by four for a score of 79-75, Williams and Bristol combined for seven points, including Williams' long ball at the 17-second mark to take the contest into overtime.
Howard took a quick lead in the overtime and advanced to a five-point advance before securing the 94-91 win.
The Bison will take the next few days to close out the academic year before facing Appalachian State on Dec. 14 at 12 p.m.
