Tariq Simmons grabbed a clutch defensive rebound and hit four straight from the free throw line in the final 11 seconds to allow South Caroline State hold off Jacksonville, 58-52 on Monday night.
Jacksonville cut the SC State lead to three, 54-51 on a layup by
DeAnthony McCallum with :50 left, but
Destin Barnes missed a 3-point attempt to tie with :14 left
Zacchaeus Sellers had 12 points and eight rebounds and
Damani Applewhite had 14 points and eight rebounds for South Carolina State (5-7), which snapped its six-game road losing streak. Simmons added 11 points and seven rebounds and
Jahmari Etienne had 10 points.
David Bell had three blocks for the Dolphins (7-8).
Bryce Workman added eight rebounds.
Destin Barnes, the Dolphins' leading scorer entering the contest at 11 points per game, was held to 4 points. He shot 14 percent from beyond the arc (1 of 7).
South Carolina State takes on Coppin State on the road on Saturday. Jacksonville matches up against North Alabama on the road on Thursday.

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University gave a resounding farewell to 2019 with a 108-63 win over Mid-Atlantic Christian University on Monday, Dec. 30 inside McDougald-McLendon Arena.
With the win, NCCU (4-10) has now won 10 consecutive home non-conference games.
NCCU found success inside early against MACU (4-7), as the Eagles outscored the Mustangs 38-8 in the paint in the first half. Keeping the ball inside also benefitted Jibri Blount (Pittsburgh, Pa.) as he tallied 19 points in the first period.
While the Eagles were doing their work inside, the Mustangs were hot from the perimeter, as the guests made 12 triples in the contest, led by Kevin Fletcher (Detroit, Mich.) who knocked down four.
NCCU stuck with what worked for the entire game, and posted a 108-63 victory to close the calendar year, with a total of 80 points scored in the paint.
Blount notched a new career-high with 33 points in the game, along with six rebounds, three assists and four steals. Jordan Perkins (Greensboro, N.C.) dished out nine assists with eight points to reach a new career mark himself, as he now stands alone with the third-most assists all-time at NCCU with 372, passing Bryan Ayala with 366.

Washington Adventist 78, Delaware State 76
Dover, Del. (Dec. 30, 2019) --- Delaware State was outscored 19-9 down the stretch in a 78-76 men's basketball loss to NAIA Washington Adventist in Memorial Hall this evening. The contest marked the final outing for the Hornets before Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play begins next weekend.
DSU dropped its fifth game in a row to complete its 2019-20 non-conference slate with a 1-13 record. The contest does count in the official record for Washington Adventist, which also defeated MEAC member Howard (71-68) this season. The Shock owns a 12-3 record in official contests this season.
Xavier Sewell led four double-figure scorers for Washington Adventist with 17 points. Derrick Hopkins came off the bench to add 14 points (7-4 FGs), while Freddie Liriano chipped in 13 and Elijah Maynard 10 for the Shock.
John Crosby was Delaware State's high scorer with 18 points, snapping a string of five consecutive games with at least 20 points.
Omar Peek-Green was second on the Hornets with 15 points to match his season high. Peek-Green was five-for-seven from the field, including 3-of-5 on three-point shots.
Pinky Wiley added 13 points, while
John Stansbury led all players with a career-high 12 rebounds for the Hornets.
Keyed by two three-pointers by Crosby and another by Peek-Green, the Hornets led 9-2 in the early going.
Washington Adventist fought back and pulled ahead 25-23 on a three-point play by Tyriq McAdoo with 10:17 left in the first half.
Delaware State outscored the Shock 9-2 in the final three minutes of the first half, and held a 45-38 lead at intermission.
The Hornets stretched their lead to 63-54 on a jumper by Wiley mid-way through the second half.
Washington Adventist clawed back over the next seven minutes and tied the score at 70 on jumper by Sewell with 3:41 left to play.
The Shock led for the first time in the second half, 72-70, on a basket in the paint by Derrick Hopkins with 3:01 left to play.

BRONX, N.Y. – After trailing by as many as 15 points in the first half, Coppin State's men's basketball team had three opportunities to tie or take the lead but fell just short in a 62-56 loss at Fordham on Monday night Rose Hill Gym.

- Andrew Robinson led three Coppin State players in double figures with 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting with three 3-pointers and four rebounds.
- Koby Thomas notched his fourth double-double in five games with 14 points and 11 rebounds. He added two blocks and a steal on the defensive end.
- Dejuan Clayton continued his climb up the CSU all-time scoring charts with 13 points to go with five rebounds and a pair of steals. Clayton now has 1,083 career points, one shy of Taariq Cephas for 18th in school-history.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team used a familiar formula to beat Howard on Monday night at the Bison's Burr Gymnasium. The Quakers dialed up long-distance (14 three-point baskets) and shared the wealth (21 assists on 31 baskets) as they improved to 7-4 overall.
