MEAC Lands Seven on AFCA FCS Coaches All-America Team

The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) revealed its 2019 FCS Coaches All-America teams on Friday, and seven players from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) were recognized -- including one player on the First Team.

North Carolina A&T State's Marcus Pettiford, the 2019 MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Year, earned First Team honors. Pettiford was a key player on North Carolina A&T State's offensive line, as the unit produced the lone 1,000-yard rusher in the MEAC this season and one of the NCAA’s best running backs in Martin, who leads the nation in rushing yards per carry and is second in scoring.

Six players earned Second Team honors: Florida A&M wide receiver Xavier Smith, South Carolina State offensive lineman Alex Taylor, North Carolina Central defensive back Bryan Mills, Florida A&M punter Chris Faddoul, North Carolina A&T State kicker Noel Ruiz and Bethune-Cookman return specialist Jimmie Robinson.

Smith led the MEAC in receptions (77) and receiving yards (1,159), averaging 105.4 receiving yards per game and 15.1 yards per reception. Averaging seven catches a game, Smith's 11 receiving touchdowns were the second-most in the conference. His season high of 201 yards came early in the season against Southern.

Taylor was a First Team All-MEAC selection after leading the Bulldogs to a share of the MEAC championship this season, and he was named Offensive Lineman of the Week five times. He anchored an offensive line that allowed South Carolina State to average 368.2 yards of total offense and 30.1 points per game.

Mills was voted as a First Team All-MEAC honoree after leading the conference with five interceptions this past season. He also ranked second in the MEAC with 13 passes defended, while also racking up 22 tackles on the season.

Faddoul continued to be one of the most consistent punters in all of college football. He showcased his powerful leg all season long and finished second in all of FCS averaging 46.0 yards per punt. He ranks second nationally in punting and booted a season-high 72-yard punt against North Carolina A&T State on Oct. 20.

Ruiz leads the FCS in field goals made per game (1.9) and has connected on 21 of 25 field goals. He is fifth in FCS in field goal percentage (.840) and second in the MEAC in scoring (102 points).

Robinson averaged 28.1 yards a return on kickoffs this season, leading the MEAC and finishing third in the FCS. His 2019 highlights included a 92-yarder against Howard and a 79-yarder for a touchdown at North Carolina Central. He also finished eighth in the nation with two blocked kicks.
