2019-20 MEAC Women's Basketball Statistics | MEAC Women's Basketball Notes
NORFOLK, Va., Dec. 18, 2019--This week is the last one of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women's basketball action prior to the Christmas holiday, with 21 total games on the docket. Coppin State, Florida A&M, Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State, Norfolk State and North Carolina Central will all be home at some point during the week, and all 11 teams will be in action.
Tuesday saw the week kick off with North Carolina Central taking down Washington Adventist -- while Bethune-Cookman fell to Alabama, Coppin State lost to Niagara, Delaware State lost to James Madison and Florida A&M fell at home to Jacksonville.
Despite Tuesday's loss, Bethune-Cookman has the best record at 6-3, while Howard is 7-4 after posting wins this past week against Niagara and East Carolina. Overall, the Bison have won three straight games.
Maryland Eastern Shore picked up its first win over a Div. I opponent this past week with a 78-76 defeat of Mount St. Mary's.
Howard's Sarah Edmond and Morgan State's Chelsea Mitchell were named MEAC Co-Players of the Week for their respective performances this past week. Edmond averaged 21.0 points per game and shot a combined 53.8 percent from the floor in two games, while Mitchell recorded her MEAC-leading fourth double-double of the season in an overtime loss to UMBC.
North Carolina A&T State's Le'on Hill was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Norfolk State's Chanette Hicks continues to lead the MEAC in scoring (21.7 ppg), assists (5.5 apg) and steals (5.2 spg), and in those categories, she ranks ninth, 27th and second in the nation. Hicks is also third nationally in field goals made and 24th in free throws made
Mitchell ranks fifth in the nation in steals, averaging four a contest.
Jayla Thornton of Howard is proving to be one of the nation's most prolific 3-point shooters, ranking eighth in the country in made 3-pointers (35) and 16th in threes made per game (3.18). Her teammate Imani Bryant is 43rd in the nation in blocked shots.
