MEAC Women's Basketball Playing Around Finals, Nearing Holiday

2019-20 MEAC Women's Basketball Statistics | MEAC Women's Basketball Notes

Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women's basketball is entering a lighter part of the schedule this week, with only 11 games on the docket through Monday, and nine of the conference's 11 programs will be in action -- and seven of them will only play once.

Coppin State and Florida A&M are idle this coming week.

Through this past week, Bethune-Cookman leads the way with a 6-1 record and the Lady Wildcats, defending MEAC Tournament champions, are coming off wins over Jacksonville and Palm Beach Atlantic. Norfolk State (6-3) has won four straight and six of seven after wins over Longwood and Hampton this past week.

Preseason favorite and reigning regular-season champion North Carolina A&T State was idle this past week, and the Aggies will return this week for a pair of games. They are 5-3 on the season and have won three in a row.

Howard bounced back this past week to defeat Fairleigh Dickinson and sits 5-4 on the season. Delaware State, meanwhile, upended Saint Peter's this past week to snap a four-game losing streak and is 4-5 on the season.

Norfolk State's Chanette Hicks and Delaware State's Sharajah Collins were named MEAC Co-Players of the Week, while Bethune-Cookman's Tatum Hayes was named Rookie of the Week and Hicks also took home Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Hicks, who has won MEAC Player or Co-Player of the Week each of the last four weeks, leads the conference in scoring (21.4 ppg), assists (5.6 apg) and steals (5.4 spg), and she is second in assist-turnover ratio. Nationally, she is second in steals, 10th in scoring and 27th in assists.

Morgan State's Chelsea Mitchell is seventh in the nation in steals per game, and Howard's Jayla Thornton ranks 23rd nationally in made 3-pointers per game -- with Hayes ranking 47th.
