NORFOLK, Va., Dec. 10, 2019—With fall finals imminent and the Christmas holiday around the corner, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and its 11 men’s basketball programs will see an abbreviated slate of games in the coming week.
Coppin State will look to make history this week, as the Eagles seek to tie the school record for most non-conference Div. I wins in a season Tuesday evening against Davidson. Wednesday will see North Carolina Central play host to Christendom, and South Carolina State will welcome UNC Asheville to Orangeburg, S.C. on Thursday.
Howard will play host to Appalachian State, Morgan State travels to LaSalle, Bethune-Cookman heads to California Baptist and North Carolina Central heads to Coastal Carolina on Saturday, while Coppin State will visit Baltimore foe UMBC and Norfolk State takes on Loyola Chicago on Sunday.
Delaware State will take on in-state rival Delaware, while North Carolina A&T State will take on UTEP and Florida A&M will visit Portland on Monday.
Morgan State will also play host to Chestnut Hill that night.
Delaware State’s John Crosby was named MEAC Player of the Week after scoring more points in a single game than any player in the MEAC has done so far this season. He finished with 31 points on 11-for-19 shooting from the floor (57.9 percent) in an 84-76 loss to Loyola (Md.). He went 8-for-10 from the free throw line (80.0 percent) and grabbed six rebounds and handed out three assists.
Koby Thomas (Coppin State) and Zion Cousins (Howard) were named MEAC Co-Defensive Players of the Week. Cousins had a double-double with 15 points and 12 boards and a block as Howard defeated rival Hampton for the Bison’s first win of the year. Thomas finished with 19 points on seven-of-14 shooting and eight boards. On the defensive end, he added three steals and a block.
Howard’s Wayne Bristol was named MEAC Rookie of the Week after scoring a season-high 17 points in the win over Hampton. He added four boards and four assists.
For the first time since the 1993-94 season, Coppin State has won four games against Div. I non-conference teams after defeating East Carolina 85-75.
Howard’s CJ Williams scored 23 points to help Howard beat rival Hampton, 94-91 in overtime, to snap the Bison’s nine-game losing streak and give head coach Kenneth Blakeney his first win as a head coach.
Delaware State’s John Crosby has scored 20 or more points in five games this season. He leads the MEAC in scoring at 20.1 points per game.
Bethune-Cookman’s Cletrell Pope is fourth in the country in rebounding. He has six double doubles this season, which is tied for sixth in the country.
North Carolina A&T State’s Tyrone Lyons scored a career-high 17 points against Bradley.
