MEAC Announces Weekly Men's Basketball Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Dec. 10, 2019 Senior guard John Crosby of Delaware State University has been tabbed as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference’s Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced today. Joining Crosby on the conference’s weekly honor roll are junior guard/forward Koby Thomas of Coppin State University and junior forward Zion Cousins of Howard University, who are the Co-Defensive Players of the Week, along with freshman guard Wayne Bristol Jr. of Howard University, who is the Rookie of the Week.
 
Crosby (G, 6-3, Jr., Baltimore, Md.) scored more points in a single game than any player in the MEAC has done so far this season, netting 31 points on 11-for-19 shooting from the floor (57.9 percent) in an 84-76 loss to Loyola (Md.). He was also 8-for-10 from the free throw line (80.0 percent) and he grabbed six rebounds and handed out three assists.
 
Thomas (G/F, 6-6, Jr., Philadelphia, Pa.) had an all-around solid game in Coppin State’s 85-75 victory at East Carolina, grabbling eight rebounds while collecting three steals and one blocked shot. Offensively, he scored 19 points while shooting 50.0 percent from the floor (7-for-14) and he had one assist.
 
Cousins (F, 6-8, Jr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) had a double-double in Howard’s first victory of the season, a 94-91 overtime thriller at Hampton. He grabbed 12 rebounds while scoring 15 points and blocking one shot.
 
Bristol (G, 6-6, Fr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) played like an upperclassman in the Bison’s overtime win at Hampton. In that contest, Bristol scored 17 points while grabbling four rebounds and dishing out four assists. 
 
Other Top Performers
Evins Desir (FAMU) was 4-for-5 from the floor (80.0 percent) in scoring 11 points in the Rattlers’ loss at No. 21 Tennessee.
 
Charles Williams (HOW) scored 23 points while grabbing two rebounds and one blocked shot in Howard’s victory at rival Hampton last Thursday.
 
Stanley Davis (MSU) scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds in a 73-65 win over Longwood.  In that game, he added four assists and two steals.
 
Jibri Blount (NCCU) averaged 14.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.0 steals in a week that saw the Eagles fall to Georgia and Charleston Southern. His top performance came against UGA, where he scored 19 points, grabbed eight rebounds and made five steals.
 
Steven Whitley (NSU) recorded averages of 14.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals in a pair of losses to Southern Illinois and Hampton. He had 20 points with six rebounds against the Pirates.
 
Damani Applewhite (SCSU) hit 70 percent of his shots (7-for-10) en route to scoring 20 points in an 80-68 win over Presbyterian College. He added eight boards, five assists and three steals.
 
Tashombe Riley (SCSU) joined Applewhite with a 20-point performance of his own against Presbyterian College. He added six rebounds, two steals, one blocked shot and one assist.
 
Da’Shawn Phillip (UMES) scored 12 points and collected six steals, three assists and three rebounds in the Hawks’ first win of the season, an 85-39 victory over Clarks Summit.
 
Ronald Jackson (NCAT) averaged 10.0 points and 8.0 rebounds as the Aggies defeated Longwood and fell to Bradley.
 
Devin Haygood (NCAT) scored 17 points while making four rebounds and blocking three shots in the Aggies’ victory over Longwood.
