MEAC Volleyball Statistics | MEAC Weekly Volleyball Notes
There are just two more weekends of regular-season play left for volleyball in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), and teams -- especially in the Northern Division -- are scrambling for positioning, or even a spot in the dance.
Howard, the four-time defending MEAC champion, can clinch the Northern Division's top seed with a win over Delaware State on Friday, sitting 10-1 league mark with three matches remaining.
Morgan State, at 8-4, currently sits in second in the North, one match ahead of Coppin State (7-5). Those two teams will play each other for the second time this season on Friday; the Lady Bears won the first meeting on Oct. 29 in four sets.
Heading into this weekend's action, UMES and Delaware State are tied for the fourth spot in the North -- but the Hawks hold the tiebreaker by virtue of winning both regular-season matches against the Hornets. If the Hornets close out strong and overtake UMES, it will mark Delaware State's first tournament appearance since 2010.
Delaware State made it to the championship match that season.
In the Southern Division, North Carolina A&T State has already locked up the top seed, sitting at 10-1 in league play (that lone loss coming to Howard in a five-set thriller on Oct. 27). The Aggies will be looking to return to the championship match for the second straight season, eyeing their first MEAC tournament crown.
North Carolina Central, at 5-6 in MEAC play, sits in second in the Southern Division, while Bethune-Cookman -- which squares off against rival Florida A&M in Tallahassee, Fla. on Friday -- sits in third, one match back. With the Lady Rattlers ineligible for the league title and postseason play, South Carolina State sits in fourth in the Southern Division and will make its first tournament appearance since 2015.
The top four teams in each division will compete in the 2019 MEAC Volleyball Championship, Nov. 22-24 in Howard University's Burr Gymnasium.
This will mark South Carolina State's first tournament appearance since 2015.
