FAMU's Stanley, NCAT's Martin Added to Walter Payton Watch List

Florida A&M redshirt senior quarterback Ryan Stanley and North Carolina A&T State redshirt junior running back Jah-Maine Martin have been added to the Walter Payton Award Watch List, it was announced on Wednesday.

Stanley, who was named to the College Football Performance Award (CFPA) Midseason FCS Watch List on Monday, has set numerous records this season. He owns four career school passing records and surpassed Quinn Gray in those categories, which include passing completions (675), passing attempts (1,117), passing yards (8,252) and touchdowns (60).

In addition, Stanley owns the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) record in passing completions and ranks second in passing yards, fourth in touchdown passes and fifth in passing attempts.

Martin is tied for the FCS national lead in rushing, averaging 126.8 yards per contest on the ground (as is Penn's Karekin Brooks), and his 8.11 yards per carry are also the best in all of FCS. His 16 rushing touchdowns are tied for the second most in FCS (and he leads the MEAC by a wide margin in that cartegory).

Martin eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark this past weekend in a 22-20 win over South Carolina State, giving the Aggies nine 1,000-uard rushers over the last 10 seasons.

The Walter Payton Award is given to the offensive player of the year in college football’s Division I subdivision and was first awarded in 1987. Previous winners of the award include Steve McNair, Tony Romo, Brian Westbrook, John Friesz, Brian Finneran, Jimmy Garoppolo and Cooper Kupp.

The 2019 winner will be announced in January during FCS Championship Week and he will be the 33rd recipient in award history.
