Penn State 84, Maryland Eastern Shore 46

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- In his opinion, Myles Dread was merely a "good" 3-point shooter last season.

He set a higher bar for his sophomore campaign on Tuesday.

Dread drained 15 points with a career-high five 3-pointers in Penn State's 84-46 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore in the opener for both teams.

"This is the work that I put in in the summer," Dread said. "I didn't want to stay at the same place, I wanted to be better."

Dread had plenty of room for error against the Hawks, though he wouldn't need it shooting 5 of 7. Lamar Stevens scored 10 of his 17 points in the first half for the Nittany Lions who started with a 9-0 run and never looked back.

They held the Hawks to just one basket over the first four minutes and forced 11 of their 19 turnovers in the first half. They led by 21 midway through the half and by as many as 48 into the second.

Rider 91, Coppin State 84

BALTIMORE – Kamar McKnight scored a game-high 24 points but it was not enough as Coppin State’s men’s basketball team fell in its season opener to visiting Rider University, 91-84, on Tuesday night at PEC Arena.

  • After trading a pair of baskets apiece, Coppin went on 14-2 run over a 3:02 stretch to turn a 4-4 tie into a 18-6 lead.  Aaron Robinson hit a pair of threes’ during the run while his twin brother, Andrew Robinson hit another, as did Dejuan Clayton.
  • Rider silenced the crowd with a layup which Clayton responded to with one of his own and Aaron Robinson hit another three to give the Eagles a 23-8 lead, their largest of the game, with 12:23 to go in the half.
  • A 5-0 run by Rider quickly cut the deficit to seven points and they pulled within 30-26 at the 6:01 mark.

UNC-Greensboro 83, North Carolina A&T State 83

GREENSBORO – The Greensboro Coliseum has been an unpleasant place for the North Carolina A&T men’s basketball team the last two times they have visited there to play crosstown rival UNC Greensboro.

Reminiscent to three years prior, the Aggies got off to a slow start against the Spartans at the coliseum. This time it resulted in an 83-50 loss Tuesday night as both teams were playing in their respective season openers.

Three years ago, the Spartans got off to an 18-2 start over the first 6 ½ minutes of the game. On Tuesday, the Spartans jumped out to an 18-2 advantage over the first five minutes of the game. What also made the two nights similar was that the Aggies had many newcomers who have never played together trying to gel against an experienced UNCG team.

#14 Memphis 97, South Carolina State 64

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- James Wiseman, the nation's top-rated recruit, had 28 points and 11 rebounds as No. 14 Memphis beat South Carolina State 97-64 on Tuesday night.

Fellow freshman Precious Achiuwa added 14 points and eight rebounds for Memphis (1-0). Wiseman connected on 11 of 14 shots and blocked three shots before checking out for good midway through the second half.

Ian Kinard led South Carolina State (0-1) with 13 points, and Jahmari Etienne scored 11.

Memphis controlled all aspects of the game, from rebounding to defense. By the early minutes of the second half the Tigers' lead had reached 21, and they continued to stretch the advantage while coasting the rest of the way.

It didn't take long for Wiseman, who missed the entire preseason dealing with injuries, to show why he was the top prize in the nation's No. 1 recruiting class. From the opening play, when he scored inside, to alley-oops and rebound putbacks, Wiseman dominated.
