NEWARK, Delaware — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men’s basketball team mounted a comeback against the University of Delaware Blue Hens on Friday night (Nov. 29), but the Hawks could not pull through as the Blue Hens took the game 75-56.
“I think we started the game and the second half with good energy,” head coach
Jason Crafton said. “We just struggled to execute in certain spots when we needed to whether it was on defense or offense, but that’s part of the journey we are on.”
The lead changed hands three time in the first seven minutes of the contest. The game would stay within two possessions over the next six minutes of game action. The Hawks would then go on a scoring drought that lasted almost five minutes before being down 39-30 at halftime.
In the second half, Delaware opened up a 13 point lead at 47-34 with 14:41 remaining. The Shore would respond with a 12-3 run fueled by three straight from behind the arc from local product
Kevon Voyles (Berlin, Md.) and another 3-pointer from redshirt senior
Ahmad Frost (Cincinnati, Ohio) to make the score 50-46 with just under 12 minutes left.
UD could come out of the media timeout and outscore Eastern Shore 25-8 over the next 10 minutes of game time to all but end the match. The Hawks would make just four field goals for the remainder of the game.
Voyles led the Hawks in scoring with 14 and junior
Canaan Bartley (Miami, Fla.) followed him up with 12. The nation’s eighth leading scorer, Nate Darling, scored 19 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to lead Delaware. Justyn Mutts carried UD the whole game with a 22 point-16 rebound performance.
