MEAC Men's Basketball: Key Games Over Break

MEAC Notes Week 4

NORFOLK, Va., Nov. 26, 2019 –
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) teams will be back in action for week four of the 2019-20 season, sprinkled around the Thanksgiving holiday. This week features a number of intriguing matchups, including games against a nationally-ranked opponent and several Power Five schools.
 
Morgan State will travel to Columbus, Ohio, on Friday to take on 10th-ranked Ohio State.
 
Maryland Eastern Shore will host Wofford in the Hawks’ home opener tonight and North Carolina Central will host Wofford on Monday.
 
On Tuesday, Howard will wrap up a six-game road trip against crosstown foe American, while North Carolina Central will tip off a four-game road trip by taking on Southern Illinois and Coppin State will face James Madison.
 
South Carolina State will wrap up their three-game road swing with a trip to Tulsa on Wednesday.
Delaware State will host Coastal Carolina on Saturday, while Bethune-Cookman will take on Georgia Tech and Norfolk State will host Niagara on Sunday.
 
Maryland Eastern Shore will begin a three-game road trip by facing Delaware on Friday and Fordham on Sunday. On Saturday, Florida A&M will continue its non-conference slate, as the Rattlers visit Kansas State.
 
For the third consecutive week, Bethune-Cookman’s Cletrell Pope was named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week. He also was named the MEAC Player of the Week.
 
He led the Wildcats to a perfect 3-0 week, including victories over Incarnate Word (83-58), Eastern Illinois (66-63) and St. Francis Illinois (74-70). He averaged 16.0 points and 12.7 rebounds, including double-doubles in all three contests.  Pope’s top outing came against St. Francis Illinois, when he netted 22 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, blocked three shots, made two steals and dished out three assists.
 
Maryland Eastern Shore’s Da’Shawn Phillip was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week after averaging 8.5 points, three boards, and 2.5 steals per game against Stanford and Oklahoma.
 
Coppin State’s Dejuan Clayton matched his career high by knocking down four threes, finishin with 21 points in the Eagles’ loss to Pacific. Theose 21 points gave him 1,003 for his career; he becomes the 23rd player in program history to have 1,000 career points.
 
For the first time since the 2013-14 season, Coppin State has won a pair of non-conference D-1 games. The Eagles defeated Cornell, 68-66, to accomplish the feat.  
 
Howard’s Charles Williams continues his effort to rewrite the record books. He needs just 15 points to become the all-time leading scorer in Howard history, which would put him in eighth place in MEAC history.
 
North Carolina A&T State’s Tyler Maye finished with a career-high 19 points, as the Aggies won their first game away from Greensboro, N.C., on the year, 66-54, in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
