MEAC Men's Basketball Ready for a Busy Week Three

NORFOLK, Va., Nov. 20, 2019—
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) teams will be back in action for week three of the 2019-20 men’s basketball season. This week features a number of intriguing matchups, including game against a nationally-ranked opponent, match-ups with Power Five conference schools, and trips to the Caribbean.
 
Florida A&M will travel to Newark, N.J., on Saturday to take on No. 12 Seton Hall. Maryland Eastern Shore will have a pair of road games against Stanford and Oklahoma, while Delaware State will take on ACC foe Virginia Tech on Wednesday.
 
Norfolk State will take on Big Ten foe Northwestern on Friday.
 
Morgan State and North Carolina A&T State will head to the Caribbean for early season tournaments. The Bears will take on Liberty on Friday to kick off a three-game slate in The Island of the Bahamas Showcase. The Aggies will face Nicholls State on Friday to kick off the Jamaica Classic in Montego Bay.
 
There will also be a pair of games against Ohio Valley schools. Bethune Cookman will face Eastern Illinois on Saturday and South Carolina State will take on Austin Peay on Monday.
 
Coppin State hosts Cornell on Saturday.
 
Coppin State’s Dejuan Clayton was named MEAC Player of the Week after leading Coppin State to a 1-2 week, including a 76-72 win over Loyola-Chicago. He averaged 17.7 points, five boards, 2.7 assists, and 1.7 steals per game. Clayton finished with 21 points, six rebounds, and two steals in the win over Loyola-Chicago.
 
Bethune-Cookman’s Cletrell Pope was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week. He finished with 10 points, 15 boards and four blocks in the Wildcats’ 100-42 win over Trinity Baptist.
 
Norfolk State’s Joe French was named MEAC Rookie of the Week after dropping 21 points against Trinity Baptist. French went six-of-nine from the field and knocked down five-of-eight trey balls. He also added four boards, two steals, a block, and an assist.
 
Howard guard CJ Williams scored 21 points against Toledo. He now has 1,888 points for his career, which is second in school history behind James Daniel III (1,933). He passed Bethune-Cookman’s Reggie Cunningham for ninth place in MEAC history.
 
Elsewhere, Morgan State earned their first win over George Washington, 68-64.
 
Norfolk State set a school record for 3-pointers made in a game, knocking down 20 of 32 from behind the arc in the Spartans’ 113-54 win over The Apprentice School. The 113 points were the most scored since a 115-95 win over Newberry College on Nov. 13, 2013.
 
The Spartans also tied its D-I record with 26 assists. The 59-point win stands as the second-largest in program Div. I history behind a 78-point margin against Mid-Atlantic Christian in December 2017. The Spartans’ Joe Bryant, Jr. finished with a career high 25 points.
