Dejuan Clayton of Coppin State University has been tabbed this week’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, while a pair of student-athletes from Bethune-Cookman University have also received honors, including senior forward
Cletrell Pope and freshman guard
Joe French, who were named Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Clayton (G, 6-2, R-Jr., Bowie, Md.) led the Eagles to a 1-2 record during the past week, including a 76-64 win over Loyola-Chicago. He averaged 17.7 points to go along with 5.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.7 steals. He had 21 points, six rebounds and two steals in the victory over Loyola-Chicago.
Pope (F, 6-9, Sr., Northport, Ala.) has gotten off to a great start for the Wildcats, winning MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for each of the first two weeks of the season. In the Wildcats’ lone game of the week, a 100-42 victory over Trinity Baptist, he grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked two shots along with scoring 10 points and dishing out a pair of assists.
French (G, 6-5, Fr., Orlando, Fla.) was a co-leader in scoring in B-CU’s win over Trinity Baptist, scoring 21 points while connecting on 6-for-9 shooting from the floor and 5-fo-8 from 3-point range. He also contributed four rebounds, two steals, one blocked shot and one assist.
Other Top Performers
John Crosby (DSU) averaged 22.0 points and 4.3 rebounds over three games, including a season-high 32 points with seven rebounds in a 92-84 loss to LIU Brooklyn.
Joe Bryant Jr. (NSU) averaged 18.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals during a 1-1 week for the Spartans that included a 113-54 victory over the Apprentice School.
Devante Carter (NSU) averaged 14.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.5 rebounds during the week for the Spartans. He had 16 points with 10 assists against the Apprentice School.
Darryl Anderson (NSU) posted 10 points, three rebounds and two assists in the Spartans’ win over the Apprentice School.
Jibri Blount (NCCU) averaged 8.5 points and 8.0 rebounds during the week, including nine points and eight rebounds against Akron and eight points and eight rebounds against No. 2 Louisville.
Randy Miller (NCCU) posted averages of 9.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in two games. He had impressive numbers of 15 points and four boards in the loss to Louisville.
