NORFOLK, Va., Nov. 19, 2019—
Morgan State’s Zoe McBride and
North Carolina A&T State’s Edie Brewer were named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Co-Players of the Year, the conference office announced today.
Howard’s Tamar Wells was named Rookie of the Year, while
Hal Clifton of
North Carolina A&T State earned Coach of the Year honors.
All awards were voted on by the conference’s head coaches and sports information directors.
McBride leads the MEAC and sits 10
th in the nation in kills, averaging 4.88 per set, totaling 504 for the season. That average jumped up to 5.22 per set in MEAC play, and she was fourth in the conference in aces in conference action. A seven-time MEAC Player of the Week this season, McBride had 16 double-doubles on the season, tied for most in the MEAC, and her 5.41 points per set are also 10
th-best in the nation. McBride had 10 matches of at least 20 kills – including a career-high 30 in the season opener against Seton Hall – and she had a career-high 23 digs against Binghamton.
Brewer is second in the nation with seven triple-doubles this season, leading the Aggies to the regular-season crown in the Southern Division. She ranks seventh in the MEAC in assists (5.7 per set), eighth in hitting percentage (.268) and ninth in kills (2.7 per set) overall, and in conference play, she is ninth in both hitting percentage (.275) and assists (5.62 per set). A four-time MEAC Player of the Week and one-time Setter of the Week, Brewer had 15 double-doubles on the season, second-most in the conference.
Wells ranks fifth in the MEAC with a .326 hitting percentage in MEAC play, and overall she ranks seventh at .281. Her 0.80 blocks per set – 82 total blocks overall – are the 10
th-most in the conference, and Wells ranks second on the team in hitting percentage and fourth in kills at just under two per set. She is tied with Kira Porter for the team lead in total blocks, and she recorded double-digit kills six times – including a season-high 15 against North Carolina A&T State. Her season high in blocks, eight, came against Coppin State.
Clifton led the Aggies to a 13-1 mark in conference play this season, winning the Southern Division regular-season title and corresponding No. 1 seed in the conference tournament – this after North Carolina A&T State was picked to finish third in the division. The Aggies come into the tournament with a 15-13 overall record, and their non-conference wins this season Gardner-Webb and Alabama A&M.
Joining McBride and Brewer on the All-MEAC First Team are Coppin State’s Miajavon Coleman and Ashley Roman, Florida A&M’s Valentina Carrasco and Maria Yvette Garcia, Howard’s Kira Porter and North Carolina A&T State’s Courteney Pitt.
The 2019 MEAC Volleyball Championship begins Friday with the quarterfinal round; the first match is set to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday’s semifinal matches will start at 5 p.m., and Sunday’s championship finale will start at 8 p.m. and be shown live on ESPNU and ESPN3.
