North Carolina A&T State 47, Bethune-Cookman 17

EAST GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T responded the way a champion should respond. The two-time defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and HBCU national champions bounced back from a humiliating loss last week at Morgan State to dominate one of the best teams in the MEAC in Bethune-Cookman with a 47-17 win at BB&T Stadium on a Saturday afternoon filled with a brisk and chilly wind.

The Aggies (7-3, 5-2 MEAC) avoided losing back-to-back conference games for the first time since 2013 by simply running the football. N.C. A&T ran 63 plays on Saturday. Fifty of their plays were runs as they compiled 300 yards on the ground led by junior running back Jah-Maine Martin who finished with 120 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries.

Martin’s third touchdown on the day, a 7-yard romp up through the middle of the Wildcats defense earned him N.C. A&T’s single-season rushing touchdowns record. It was his 19th rushing touchdown of the season breaking Tarik Cohen’s record of 18. Martin’s 19th touchdown also tied Cohen for the school’s single-season record in total touchdowns.

“It’s a great feeling but I’m still not satisfied,” Martin said about breaking the record. “That’s not enough for me. I set my expectations high. We’re going to celebrate tonight, but tomorrow we’re back to work.”

There is plenty of work for the Aggies to do. The win pushes them closer to another Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl berth, their fourth in five years and their third straight overall. But there is still one regular-season game to play and that is against archrival N.C. Central 1 p.m., Saturday, November 23 at BB&T Stadium.

If the Aggies win, they’re in. But the Eagles will not make that an easy task.

Morgan State 59, Virginia Lynchburg 26

BALTIMORE, Md. (November 16, 2019) --  It was senior day for Morgan State's last home game of the season against Virginia-Lynchburg and the final game in Hughes Stadium ended in a convincing victory for the Bears.

After recognizing 15 senior football players who were competing in their final game, Morgan State (3-8, 2-5 MEAC) won in a 59-26 rout of Virginia University of Lynchburg 59-26 on a chilly and sunny Saturday afternoon.

"Some of these guys you wish you had them for another three years," said Morgan State head coach Tyrone Wheatley. "You wish you were here at the beginning of their careers. Just as well as their athleticism-- in who they are as football players. They're really good guys."

The Bears scored more than 50 points for the first time since 2011 when they defeated the North Carolina Central University Eagles 52-3.

Senior quarterback DeAndre Harris threw for 317 yards and five touchdowns against the 0-9 Dragons.

The last quarterback to throw for five touchdowns in a game for the Bears was Moses Skillon in a 69-7 win versus Delaware State.

Though it was a career day for Harris, he still feels he can improve his game.

"It wasn't what I wanted it to be," Harris said. "It's always room for improvement with me and the offense."

Norfolk State 33, Delaware State 17

DOVER, Del. - Norfolk State overcame an early 10-0 deficit and outscored Delaware State 33-7 the rest of the way, securing its first three-game winning streak in eight years with a 33-17 victory over the Hornets on Saturday at Alumni Stadium.

Juwan Carter threw two more touchdown passes and safety Bobby Price recorded NSU's third defensive touchdown in as many weeks with an 84-yard interception return in the third quarter.

The win improves NSU to 5-6 overall, 4-3 in the MEAC. The five wins are the Spartans' most since the 2011 season (since vacated), and the three-game winning streak is also NSU's longest since that year. With Florida A&M ineligible for the MEAC title, NSU enters the final week of the season with a chance to still tie for first place in the conference.

The Spartans also established a new Division I record for points in a season Saturday, again eclipsing that 2011 team. NSU has scored 330 points this season.

Things did not start well for NSU, however. The Spartans were stopped on 4th-and-1 near midfield on their first drive of the game, and on the first play after the possession change, DSU's Thomas Bertrand-Hudon scored on a 48-yard TD run.

After forcing NSU to punt, the Hornets (2-9, 1-7) drove 59 yards in 12 plays to go ahead by 10 after a 31-yard field goal by Jose Romo-Martinez with 2:36 left in the quarter.

But the Spartans went on to score the next 23 points. After driving into a stiff gusty wind in the opening quarter, NSU had the wind at its back in the second and took advantage. Carter ended a 13-play, 78-yard drive with an 11-yard TD pass to Da'Kendall James with 11:42 left in the first half. The PAT was blocked, keeping DSU in the lead at 10-6.

DURHAM, N.C. – In the final home game of his college career, North Carolina Central University senior defensive end Darius Royster recorded his conference-high ninth sack of the season and tallied a stop for a loss for the 10th straight contest, but the host Eagles fell to South Carolina State University, 24-0, on Saturday inside O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium.

Royster finished the day with 10 takedowns and now has 16 hits for a loss and three forced fumbles on the year. NCCU safety Deonta Fair collected a game-high 14 tackles, while linebacker Jerome Foster added 10 stops.

S.C. State (7-3, 5-2 MEAC) posted 250 yards of total offense, including 208 yards on the ground. Bulldogs running back LaBron Morris accounted for a career-high 135 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns.

NCCU (4-7, 3-4 MEAC) was held to 170 total yards, converted just 1-of-13 on third down, and did not move the ball into the red zone. Although NCCU committed just six penalties for 53 yards, they came at significant times that hurt the Eagles.

NCCU senior punter John Pecaro launched a 70-yard punt to equal the ninth-longest punt in school history.
