Howard Volleyball Rallies to Take Down Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. Nov. 12, 2019 – Howard erased a 2-1 match deficit to defeat Norfolk State in five sets (21-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 15-12) on the road on Tuesday.
 
With the win, HU moved to 16-12 overall and 13-1 in league play.
 
Junior Myca Mitchell and sophomore Kailyn Williams led the Bison comeback, each producing a double-double. Mitchell recorded 13 digs and 12 kills while the Texas native a career night, posting 19 kills and 11 digs in the victory.
 
After NSU took set one, the Bison responded in game two with a .405 hitting percentage, including 16 kills. Williams and Mitchell combined for 12 kills and helped HU tie the match at one apiece.
 
Howard and Norfolk State went back-and-forth in set three with the Spartans pulling away late to take a 2-1 edge in the match.
 
Down, but not out, the Bison rallied to force a fifth set, thanks to Williams and freshman Tamar Wells combining for nine kills in game four.
 
Set five saw both squads deadlocked at four until the Bison scored three consecutive times to take a 7-4 lead. NSU sliced the margin as low as one, 8-7, but Howard withstood the Spartans' charge to grab a big road win.
 
Newcomer Semira Blair served as the squad's primary setter tonight, producing a career-high 49 assists, six digs, six kills and four total blocks.
 
Defensively, junior Abby Morrow had a match-leading 22 digs while freshman Asha Johnson flirted with a double-double (12 digs and nine kills) in the victory.
 
For NSU (1-23, 1-13 MEAC), Anna Rupertova recorded a double-double for the Spartans with 17 kills and 17 digs in the loss.
