MEAC Announces Weekly Volleyball Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Oct. 7, 2019North Carolina A&T State junior Edie Brewer and Coppin State senior Christa Johnson were named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Co-Players of the Week, the conference office announced today. Delaware State’s Jordan Vang was named Rookie of the Week, while North Carolina A&T State sophomore Shaylynn Hall and Bethune-Cookman senior Shayla Eugene shared Defensive Specialist of the Week honors and Delaware State junior Jelena Dukic was named Setter of the Week.
 
Brewer (6-0, Jr., S/RS, West Chester, Ohio) hit .319 in three matches this past week, averaging 2.9 kills, 5.6 assists, 1.9 digs and 1.4 blocks per set as the Aggies went 3-0. She recorded yet another triple-double against Coppin State – racking up 23 assists, 15 kills and 10 digs to go along with eight total blocks – and she was one dig shy of another triple-double against North Carolina Central (32 assists, 17 kills, nine digs, seven blocks). Brewer hit above .300 in all three matches.
 
Johnson (5-9, Sr., MH/RS, Crestview, Fla.) hit .593 in three matches this past week for the Eagles – including a career performance in a non-conference win over UMBC. In that match, Johnson racked up 14 kills, going error-free to hit .583 while also picking up four total blocks at the net. She went error-free for the entire week, turning in a seven-kill, six-block, .583 performance against North Carolina A&T State, before recording 11 kills and hitting .611 against North Carolina Central.
 
Vang (5-10, Fr., OH, Ontario, Canada) hit .292 in two matches this past week, leading the Hornets to a 1-1 mark in league matches. She had a career-high 18 kills and seven digs – to go along with a career-high four service aces -- against Norfolk State, a match in which she hit .351. Earlier in the week, Vang had 15 kills, four digs and an ace against Northern Division leader Howard.
 
Hall (6-2, So., MH, Garner, N.C.) was a force at the net for the Aggies, averaging nearly a block and a half per set in three matches this past week. She racked up a career-high nine total blocks in a five-set win over Coppin State – after recording seven total blocks in a five-set win over rival North Carolina Central. She also had a pair of blocks in a straight-set win over Morgan State to close out the week.
 
Eugene (5-4, Sr., DS, Fort Worth, Texas) averaged 5.8 digs per set in three matches this past week – including a career-high 28 on Friday in a four-set win over South Carolina State. She ended the week with 19 digs in three sets against Stetson, and Eugene also had 11 digs against Jacksonville.
 
Dukic (5-9, Jr., S, Futog, Serbia) averaged 11.9 assists per set for the Hornets this past week, recording double-doubles in both matches. After opening the weekend with a 33-assist, 11-dig effort against Howard, she racked up 50 assists and 10 digs against Norfolk State to go along with two service aces.

Ashley Roman (CSU) had 27 digs against North Carolina Central and 22 digs each against UMBC and North Carolina A&T State.
 
Jasmal Cruz (DSU) racked up 18 digs against Norfolk State.
 
Alexis Gosha (FAMU) had 18 kills and nine digs against South Carolina State.
 
Nahla Muhammad (FAMU) recorded 19 digs against South Carolina State.
 
Semira Blair (HOW) recorded a double-double (21 assists, 10 digs) against Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
Kira Porter (HOW) hit .529 against Delaware State, racking up nine kills and seven blocks.
 
Zoe McBride (MSU) racked up 27 kills and 15 digs against North Carolina Central.
 
Jennevy Santos (MSU) had 22 digs against North Carolina Central.
 
Roi Wallace (MSU) racked up 57 assists against North Carolina Central.
 
Addy Warfield (NCAT) had 25 assists and nine digs in a win over rival North Carolina Central.
 
Christine Alcox (NCCU) had 13 kills against Morgan State and 12 in matches against North Carolina A&T State and Coppin State.
 
Celene Morris (NCCU) had 46 assists against Coppin State.
 
Julisa Carrizosa (NSU) had seven kills against Delaware State.
 
Myleah Carter (NSU) had 16 digs against Delaware State.
 
Ivana Blazevic (UMES) racked up 47 assists against Norfolk State.
 
Ilina Spasova (UMES) had 14 kills each against Norfolk State and Howard.
