MEAC Volleyball Entering the Homestretch

2019 MEAC Volleyball Statistics | MEAC Weekly Volleyball Notes

As the calendar flips to November, the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) volleyball season is hitting the homestretch, with champ[ionship tournament slots available for the taking.

Howard is now the lone unbeaten team in MEAC play after Sunday's thrilling five-set victory over North Carolina A&T State. That match was not only an encore of the 2018 championship match, but at the time, both programs were unbeaten in league play. The Bison -- winners of nine straight -- are in the driver's seat for another Northern Division title, sitting at 9-0 in MEAC play.

Howard's Kira Porter was named MEAC Player of the Week this past Monday, with North Carolina A&T State's Mallory Porcher and Shaylynn Hall being named Rookie and Defensive Specialist of the Week, respectively. Freja Gortz of Delaware State was named Setter of the Week.

Second-place Morgan State and Coppin State are four matches back, both at 6-4. The Lady Bears defeated the Eagles this past Tuesday, and those two teams will meet again on Nov. 8.

The Lady Bears have won four in a row.

Delaware State, at 5-5 in MEAC play under first-year head coach Dr. Bruce Atkinson, holds the No. 4 slot, a match ahead of Maryland Eastern Shore.

The top four teams in each division will advance to the MEAC Volleyball Championship (Nov. 22-24 in Washington, D.C.).

In the Southern Division, the Aggies are still four matches ahead in the standings despite Sunday's loss. North Carolina A&T State is 9-1 in MEAC play, while rival North Carolina Central sits second in the standings at 5-5. Those two teams will meet in Durham, N.C. on Friday.

Bethune-Cookman (3-7) and South Carolina State (0-8) round out the top four in the Southern Division. Florida A&M is 5-5 in MEAC play, but the Rattlers are ineligible for this year's championship and postseason play.
