NORFOLK, Va., Oct. 28, 2019Howard senior Kira Porter was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. North Carolina A&T State’s Mallory Porcher was named Rookie of the Week, while North Carolina A&T State sophomore Shaylynn Hall earned Defensive Specialist of the Week honors and Delaware State freshman Freja Gortz was named Setter of the Week.

Porter (5-11, Sr., MB, Lake Tahoe, Nev.) was strong at the net and on the attack in helping the Bison remain unbeaten in MEAC play – including a five-set win over North Carolina A&T State in a match-up of MEAC unbeatens. For the week, Porter hit .475, averaging 2.2 kills and 0.70 blocks per set. She opened with a 10-kill, five-block, one-ace performance against North Carolina Central – before racking up 12 kills, three service aces and two blocks, hitting .611, against the Aggies.

Porcher (6-0, Fr., MH, Chesapeake, Va.) was strong at the net for the Aggies, averaging 1.3 blocks per set as North Carolina A&T State went 1-1 on the weekend. She opened with a pair of blocks against Norfolk State on Friday, before turning out on Sunday with a seven-block, four-kill performance against Howard. Those seven total blocks were a career high, and Porcher has had at least two blocks in nine straight matches.

Hall (6-2, So., MH, Garner, N.C.) averaged over a block and a half per set (1.62) in two matches this past weekend for the Aggies. After notching four total blocks on Friday in a sweep of Norfolk State, she came out on Sunday for a nine-block performance (two solo, two assisted) in a five-set match of conference unbeatens against Howard. Those nine blocks tied her career high, which Hall set earlier this season against Coppin State.

Gortz (5-9, Fr., S, Sonderborg, Denmark) averaged 13.7 assists and 3.3 digs per set in helping the Hornets pick up a pair of MEAC wins over the weekend. She opened with 36 assists and 13 digs against Bethune-Cookman for her first career double-double, before racking up 46 assists on Sunday against Florida A&M.
