SMYRNA, Del., Oct. 26, 2019—Norfolk State won the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women’s cross country championship on Saturday at the Delaware State Outreach & Research Center, tallying 47 points.
The Spartans won their first title since 2009 and their second overall.
Senior Martha Bissah made history, running a 17:44.38 over the 5K course – her fastest time of the season – to become the first woman to win three straight MEAC cross country individual titles.
Norfolk State placed three runners in the top 10 and four in the top 20.
Maryland Eastern Shore was second in the team standings with 75 points, and Aurelia Jepkorir led the Hawks with a second-place finish after running a 17:58.82. Howard was third with 103 points, followed by Morgan State with 110 points.
Florida A&M, which had its streak of seven straight MEAC women’s cross country titles snapped, came in fifth in the team standings with 113 points.
Norfolk State head coach Kenneth Giles was named Outstanding Coach, while Bissah was again named Outstanding Performer.
The top 15 finishers were named All-MEAC.
