Week Two of MEAC Hoops Conference Play Coming Up

This weekend will mark the second week of conference play for Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) men's and women's basketball, and it's a chance for first-week trends to either continue or for new trends to emerge.

On the men's side, Norfolk State and Coppin State are 2-0 atop the standings after each recorded a pair of home wins over the weekend. Coppin defeated Savannah State and Delaware State for its first two wins of 2018-19, while the Spartans defeated Delaware State and Florida A&M.

Defending tournament champion North Carolina Central made an early statement on Saturday with a home win over preseason favorite and defending regular-season co-champion Bethune-Cookman.

North Carolina A&T State opened with an overtime win over South Carolina State.

Coppin State's Dejuan Clayton was named MEAC Player of the Week on Tuesday, while Florida A&M's M.J. Randolph earned Rookie of the Week honors and Norfolk State's Jordan Butler was named Defensive Player of the Week.

Norfolk State will have its first road game in conference play on Saturday, taking on Coppin State in an early match-up of MEAC unbeatens. The Spartans will then return home on Monday to face Bethune-Cookman. The North Carolina schools will also be on the road for the first time in MEAC play, with both teams squaring off against Maryland Eastern Shore and Delaware State.

On the women's side, Norfolk State and Maryland Eastern Shore are both 2-0 and atop the standings. The Spartans picked up home wins over Delaware State and Florida A&M, while the Lady Hawks defeated Morgan State on the road, before coming from behind to score a home win over Howard.

Bethune-Cookman and North Carolina A&T State, the defending regular-season co-champions, opened on Saturday with wins over North Carolina Central and South Carolina State, respectively.

Coppin State, Howard, Morgan State and Savannah State are all 1-1 in MEAC play after the first week.

Morgan State's Adre'onia Coleman, who averaged a double-double this past week, was named MEAC Player of the Week, while Florida A&M's Mya Moye took home Rookie of the Week honors. Chance Graham of Coppin State and Khadedra Croker of Norfolk State shared the Defensive Player of the Week award.

Maryland Eastern Shore will be at home this weekend, taking on North Carolina Central and preseason favorite North Carolina A&T State. Norfolk State will open the weekend at Coppin State on Saturday, before returning home on Monday for a test against Bethune-Cookman.
