MEAC Hoops Gearing Up for Week Three of Conference Play

Two full weeks of conference play are in the books, and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) regular-season races are beginning to take shape. Norfolk State sits atop both the men's and women's standings, with both Spartan squads at 4-0 in league play. North Carolina A&T State is 3-0 in both the men's and women's standings, while the North Carolina Central men are also 3-0.

On the men's side, the Spartans remained unbeaten in MEAC play this past week with a road win over Coppin State, before returning to Echols Hall to defeat preseason favorite Bethune-Cookman on Monday. The Aggies, meanwhile, went on the road this past weekend to defeat Delaware State and Maryland Eastern Shore.

The defending champion Eagles also picked up two road wins over the weekend, keeping pace with their rival.

Florida A&M and South Carolina State both sit at 2-1 in conference play; the Bulldogs went on the road this past weekend to pick up wins over Morgan State and Coppin State.

Norfolk State's Derrik Jamerson, Jr. was named MEAC Player of the Week, presented by the U.S. Marines, after dropping a career-high 26 points and hitting seven 3-pointers against the Wildcats. Florida A&M's M.J. Randolph was named Rookie of the Week and Morgan State's Stanley Davis, Jr. earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Norfolk State will be on the road again this weekend to take on Savannah State and South Carolina State, while the North Carolina schools will be at home to take on Coppin State and Morgan State; Saturday's match-up between the Bears and Aggies will be broadcast live on FloHoops, as will Monday's tilt between Morgan State and North Carolina Central.

On the women's side, Norfolk State is a perfect 4-0 in MEAC play after wins this past weekend over Coppin State and Bethune-Cookman. Preseason favorite and defending MEAC champion North Carolina A&T State survived a scare on Monday at Maryland Eastern Shore, emerging from Princess Anne, Md. with a 51-49 victory.

Maryland Eastern Shore is now 3-1 in league play this season, as is Howard -- which is coming off home wins over Bethune-Cookman and Morgan State.

South Carolina State's Taylor Brown averaged a double-double this past week, shooting over 61 percent from the floor, and was named MEAC Player of the Week, presented by the U.S. Marines. Rayven Peeples of North Carolina A&T State was named Rookie of the Week, while her teammate Mikaya Wilson and Norfolk State's Danyael Goodhope shared Defensive Player of the Week honors.

The Spartans will hit the road this weekend, looking to keep their unblemished mark in MEAC play as they take on Savannah State on Saturday and South Carolina State on Monday. North Carolina A&T State will be home to face Morgan State and Coppin State.

Maryland Eastern Shore will kick off its Florida swing on Saturday at Florida A&M, before taking on Bethune-Cookman on Monday.

Howard's only game will be Saturday, an afternoon tilt at South Carolina State.
