MEAC Cross Country Nears the Midway Point

With the final weekend of September coming up, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) cross country slate reaches its unofficial midway point, and there are just four weekends before the annual conference championship meet in Smyrna, Del.

Florida A&M made history this past weekend, as the men took the team title at the University of Florida's Mountain Dew Gator Invitational for the first time in program history. Junior David Too, the reigning MEAC champion, again took individual gold, completing the 8K course in just over 24 minutes, 11 seconds. He bested his conference-best time by just over a second, and Too paced five Rattlers who finished in the top 10.

The FAMU men hold the five fastest 8K times in the MEAC so far this season.

Because of the Rattlers' strong start to the 2018 campaign -- highlighted by Too's dominance -- they are ranked No. 6 in the South Region according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Click here to view the latest rankings.

On the women's side, Emmax Kiplagat shaved a minute off her MEAC-best time at 5K, turning in a 17:12.80 to finish fifth overall and help the Lady Rattlers finish fourth in the team standings. The FAMU women hold the MEAC's five fastest times at 5K so far in 2018.

Both Too and Kiplagat repeated as MEAC Runners of the Week.

Maryland Eastern Shore hosted the UMES Invitational in Princess Anne, Md. this past Saturday, with Howard and Morgan State finishing second on the men's and women's sides, respectively. Coppin State and Delaware State also competed in the meet this past weekend.

Delaware State and Maryland Eastern Shore will stay somewhat local this coming weekend, competing in the Don Cathcart Invitational in Salisbury, Md. on Saturday. Norfolk State will return to action after several weeks off, joining Howard in the George Mason Invitational.

Both North Carolina schools will be back in action this weekend, competing in the Greensboro Cross Country Invitational. South Carolina State will be back in action at the Charleston Classic.
